To each their own. Here's what we have done:
My daughter was almost a teen before we bought our popup and started camping. The point of it was to get away from the TV and computer, etc, to be unreachable and what we called "being family". Instead of TV, when it rains we play Scrabble, Yahtzee, Rummy or the like. Some magazine and book reading is also in the offing. My daughter was right there with us on wanting it this way. The whole point of going was for it to be different.
Now, we just traded our popup for a 5th wheel, my daughter graduated from High School the other day, and my wife and I are going on our first trip together alone next week while our daughter attends a Christian rock festival camp. My wife wants a TV for future trips, and we will probably get one and watch our old B&W 'The Saint' and 'The Avengers' DVDs in the evenings we don't have a fire.
The conclusion is, again, To each their own. Of course, your own can change in different phases of life! hehehe!

When I went camping, I didn't take a tv. Now that I drive my beach front, cabin in the pines, etc. I want comforts. If I feel a walk on the beach is in order, I can turn it off.

I think the DVD player has its place and time. We let our kids watch a movie when we are traveling to and from the campground, and occasionally when it rains or it too hot!! I think as long as you set limits you will be ok.
