We just upgrade from tents to a travel trailer last year. We have two kids 10 and 4. My mom wanted to buy them a portible dvd player for camping and I said no. We there to spend time as a family an enjoy the woods. On one of our trips my mom and dad showed up and gave the kids a portible dvd player. After become upset that my wishes where not respected I relented and said they could keep it, but it could only be used if it was raining. Everyone agreed and we have had no problems with the kids wanting to stay in an watch moives when it nice out, and the few time it rained I've get to addmit I was a nice distraction for the kids for an hour or so. Should I have stuck to my guns and said no to the dvd player?

Would have been nice if the folks gave you a heads up beforehand, but what is done is done. I think it's fine with the Rainy Times exceptions. The kids need something to enjoy. My 11 year old bores quickly if nothing to do. None of us want to be stuck inside and I carefully plan our campouts based on the weather. So far for a year have nailed it every weekend! Just hope I can keep wiggling schedules each time off to match the good weekends!
We don't take a TV on trips, we have the DVD player in the Durango and let her watch all her DVD's en route, unless I know there is some great scenery coming up I make her put it away for awhile. I thought I would want a TV, but took it on the big trip last year and think I had it on once for about ten minutes. Too many other fun things to be doing around the campgrounds like Biking, Walking, Pool Table, Air Hockey, and the Commissary Giant Ice Cream Bowls!

We let our kids use the TV at night if they want, and it does not seem to happen very often.

The "Nintindo" generation gets way too bored for the stuff we used to do when camping! Fireside ghost stories, "Snipe hunts", Statue Maker, Blindmans Bluff, red-light-green-light, hide and go seek, scavenger hunt...even wienie roasting's and smoores. What have we done to our kids!
I can barely get my son and daughter out of the RV on a nice day, until I pull the fuse (secretly!) on the TV!

My theory is if you do not take a TV and have children with you it will rain every day.
Our children were all readers so in the long ago when we took them camping they could always entertain themselves if it rained.

No sir I do not think you were wrong. Think a minute about it - 50 weeks a year mom & dad let us do this! Now they take us camping and have us do this! SO, all of a sudden you have a rebellion on your hands next year, and the kids refuse to camp with you.
The camping experience should be one that is looked forward to all year by the kids. When we had a child at home we very seldom had time to watch TV and there were no game machines.
AS ADULTS MY WIFE AND i SELDOM EVER TURN THE TV ON. IT IS NOT NEEDED EXCEPT FOR NEWS AND WEATHER ONCE IN AWHILE.

We use our tv while camping. We don't care what other people choose to do....we like watching tv at night before bed !! It IS nice for rainy days and we also leave it on for the dogs while we are out and they are in their crate.

I agree. It's also nice if weather reports are of any concern to you. After all, you can only "enjoy the woods" for so long before you go stir crazy (shorter period yet when it comes to kids). Make the experience enjoyable for them, not something they don't look forward to. TV is fine while 'vacationing' -- and that's what camping is, isn't it?
