We're taking an 8 week trip through the northeast this summer, July and August. We've gotten some great suggestions so far in my other thread about the trip.
We're leaving from NJ and going as far as Acadia National park in Maine. We're considering driving up to Nova Scotia (the ferry is too expensive). However, it will almost double the mileage to our furthest point from home. It will add at least 1200 miles total, with sightseeing, possible as much as 1500 miles.
Is Nova Scotia worth the extra cost and time. I'm sure it's beautiful, but is it that much different from Maine and the north east coast of the U.S. to justify the extra expense and time? We've never been there and we'll probably spend some time in Canada, we just don't know if we should go that far North.
What do you think?

I prefer Nova Scotia to Maine for many reason, the least of which is the scenery and people. It is far more scenic IMHO.

I spent a week on PEI (Prince Edward Island) and could see Nova Scotia from there --far in the distance. PEI is awesome. And I would love to see Nova Scotia. Those islands feel like you are on the edge of another world...in a Good way
YES! Try to see Nova Scotia. You will be glad you did.

Visited NS last summer for the 2nd time. I prefer Pugwash and camping on the cliff overlooking the sea.

Timewise, with 8 weeks to spend and coming from NJ, I would say Nova Scotia would be worth a visit. You could even justify a side trip for a few days to Prince Edward Island. Budgetwise, with a weak dollar and high cost of a liter of petrol, only you can make that call.
We've done PEI twice and NS twice (once via The Cat from Bar Harbor) and thoroughly enjoyed them, as well as highlights of New Brunswick along the way. They all have some really nice national and provincial parks. Several days poking around the Cabot Trail is time well spent.
My minimum time budget, including travel, would be 2 weeks (from Maine) for NS, and maybe up to another week for a side trip over to PEI.
If you want to catch some of Canada without such a large commitment of time and money, you might consider doing some of the closer-by attractions such as Campobello Island (free bridge from Maine), Grand Manan Island (ferry from NB), the coastline of NB including the national and provincial parks.
We've always found the highways to be good and customs not a problem. Have fun!!

The scenery of Prince Edward Island is nice, but Nova Scotia is better in my opinion. I agree with a writer above in that to see NS you should take a minimum of two weeks. NS is small enough so that you can park your rig at various spots and explore a lot of places. To name a few of the don't miss places in NS are Halifax, Lunenburg, Sydney, Cape Breton Highlands Park and the Fortress of Louisbourg.

Last year we took a 2 month trip through Ontario- Quebec-New Brunswick- Nova Scotia- Maine- Vermont- New Hampshire- and then home to Michigan.
If you go to Nova Scotia then by all means go to Cape Breton and do the Cabot Trail (clockwise if your wife doesn't like riding next to the edge of cliffs). Cape Breton Island was the most beautiful part of our whole trip.
To get to Nova Scotia you'll go through New Brunswick and there a must see is St. John and the Reverse Falls. Actually it's more of a rapids but you see the tides force the river in an opposite direction twice a day. Spectacular !!!
We were disappointed in Prince Edward Island. Rather flat terrain and potatoe fields by the miles. In fact I think every farm had a fruit stand out front selling the same bags of potatoes for the same cost. Driving over the bridge is thrilling (and free) but driving back it costs I think $45....
Now, if you don't want to go that far North then I would suggest the coast of Maine.
Bar Harbor would be our #1 choice. A drive up to Cadillac Mountain is a must see. Take along a lunch and towels and there's a huge sandy beach to relax at, on the way up. BTW, the sea gulls are trained to steal bags of chips from your blanket so watch out.. You can drive (on pavement) all the way to the top of the mountain. It overlooks Bar Harbor and the whole Bay area.
Acadia National Park area is just gorgeous. They are in the process of extending the road through there.
Finally if you have the opportunity go to Mount Washington in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. That's a once in a lifetime trip to remember. I almost did the drive to the top. Glad we took the tour van instead. At the top the visibility was 25 FEET, winds gusting to 65 MPH and the temperature was just above freezing ( down below it was 78° sunny and clear). The top of MT. Washington had recorded winds of over 200 MPH. Fastest wind ever recorded of any mountain in the U.S. On a clear day you can see forever !!! There's no guard rails and at some parts only one lane. If you go over the edge, oh well - your troubles are over
Happy trails,

By all means try to make it to Nova Scotia. Cape Breton Island and the Cabot Trails alone are worth the extra effort. If you are a seafood fan then NS "may" be better that Maine (which we love too). Be sure to visit Louisburg while there and sample some scallops in Digby.
Peggy's Cove is lovely and will be packed with tourists that time of summer. Don't eat there! If it's still open try Shaws Landing a a little north of there.
