If you can swing it, time and moneywise, I'd say do it. You must see the Bay of Fundy, which you can do from New Brunswick, as well, in case you are running short of time.
With re: to the ferry cost... expensive for RV's, but maybe leave it behind, take pedestrians over and spring for a cheap motel? You'd save time and fuel. Only you can make that determination.
Good luck. Anything that gets you out of NJ will be a great trip.
We spent last summer up thru Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI and loved every minute. Out on Digby neck in Nova Scotia do a whale watch on the zodiac..Wonderful. You can do a search on "To do List Maritimes" We posted alot of our trip back then and some wonderful people gave us great ideas of things to do and see. Any questions feel free to PM me. Have fun and enjoy life while it is yours to enjoy. Janet

I'm not a history expert, but I was very taken by the history of the sailors and ships lost during the many storms near Nova Scotia. You will see memorials -- very interesting and humbling.

After Maine (which is way overpriced and crowded in summer) cross at Calais, NB, stay at St. Martins, then up to see the tides at Fundy, then over to Nova Scotia, we prefer the upper 1/2, north of the causeway, Cape Breton, love Antigonish (Wyden Trailer Ct, right in town)) circle upper NS counter Clockwise and down to catch the ferry, no charge to PEI, start at the eastern tip and meander to the other end of PEI, Ann of Green Gables, use the provincial parks, take the bridge back to NB then up to the Gaspe' Penninsula, circle it counter clockwise and west to Quebec City, forget Montreal and go on to Ontario and cross back into U.S. at 81 and on down to N.J. Sounds like a lot but 8 weeks gives you plenty of time. With the U.S. dollar down to the same as the Canadian dollar the campgrounds won't be full as Canada is no longer a bargain for Americans especially with Canadian fuel about a $1 a gallon higher. Our favorite place in North America is Newfoundland but it takes more time and the toll for a 40' rig with tow is over $600.

That itinerary sounds great. I'm a little concerned about the cost with the weak $ and the higher cost of gas.
The suggestion about leaving the RV and taking the ferry to Nova Scotia and renting a car is a really good one. I didn't even really think of that, but it would save a bunch of money, even with a few nights in a cheap motel.
You will find that in NS there are many bed & breakfasts particularly along the coast. While in Sothern NS Be sure to check out Annapolis Royal on the Bay of Fundy and Lunenburg South of halifax on the Atlantic.
With the price of gas, I'd take another look at the ferry, it's a long way around.
If you drive, take the small ferry from Campobello to Ca. via a couple small islands. It was pretty cheap, very cool, and you can avoid the lines in Calais. 1st time I've been on a ferry where you drive over the beach to get to it... If you do some research there's a couple campgrounds on a couple of the islands. The provincial park on Campobello was nice too.

Many of the victims of the Titanic are buried in Halifax. We spent 1 week in NS and intend to go back. Cabot trail, Peggys Cove, many other places to see. We enjoyed PEI, saw the play (Ann of Green Gables and toured lighthouses, 1 is a bed and breakfast. NS is well worth the trip.
Hubbards Beach Campground is a great place to stay - about 40 minutes outside of Halifax. It is within short day trips to places like Peggy's Cove and Lunenburg. The beach it's self is great with fairly warm water for swimming as the ocean goes.
Great people...Great Seafood..Great sights..
