There are far too many ex-Microsofties contributing to this forum for folks to get accurate information. Maybe posters should indicate there current employer or where they retired from so that their opinions can be properly evaluated.
Hey come on guys.. Vi$ta is great... as long as you don't need to print... or access another computer... or have multiple users on the same PC... or run games over the internet... or share files. Sorry... but I love the analogy to cars... "sorry honey but we need to pull over and reboot the car in order to continue on our journey". Consumers would put up with that for about 1 second then the company would be laughed off the stock exchange LOL.
The world needs some alternatives... NOW.

You forgot the most important part of your computer if you want to use Vista and that is the ram. Most folks that are having trouble with Vista do not have enough ram, Vista is a pig for memory and you need at least 2 gig for it to rumn properly and the second thing you have to have is SP-1. DO NOT download searchlight as part of SP-1 as it makes the system even a bigger hog of memory.
I still like and use XP but thats my thing.
Oh yeah 8.1 van if you want specs these are mine in the box I just built.

The one thing that has always gave Microsoft the advantage over other OS's is the huge amount of different hardware it supported. Any one could make a USB Toaster and build drivers to get it running on windows. This also gets many people into lots of problems too. Mac for years only had to support Mac hardware. Early Linux users had to stick with mainstream hardware or it wouldn't work. OS2 never got past ISA support. I ran OS2 for a year before Windows 95 came out but my family could use Windows 95 better. I have a 400 buck Vista laptop which works!
That said I have started up a Linux desktop every night for the last 8 years to check my email, surf the net, and post on RV.net. Because I know it will work.
I just received my 17" HP Laptop with Core 2 Duo, 3GB RAM, 320GB HD, Blu-Ray HD DL drive, Nvidia 8600 GT 512mb, HDMI,ATSC tuner etc. It was loaded with tons of junk from Norton,AOL,HP etc so I deleted all the junk and updated to Vista SP1 and Microsoft Office 2007 Ultimate SP1 and it runs perfect. I was watching some blu-ray movies using the remote control and everything worked fantastic. I bet most people blame all that junk on Microsoft when it's the PC vendors like HP, Dell etc that load all that junk on and it slows it down and makes the desktop look like Hwy 22 in Union NJ. It's amazing how Microsoft gets all the blame for stuff they had nothing to do with.

I have a 17" Laptop on order with Core 2 Duo, 320GB HD, Nvidia 8600GT 512mb, blu-ray dual-layer burner, HD TV tuner, HDMI etc. Try watching and recording free OTA HD programs and watching blu-ray movies on a 17" Mac laptop.
Or try deleting, copying or moving files on Vista. You know, basic stuff that OS's were able to do for decades that Vista can't do properly. Even after SP1. What's the current record? 131 years to copy 170mb of files? Google "Vista's long goodbye" for details. Another case of MS having no idea how to fix their problems. Can't blame the hardware vendors for this one either. Probably due to the extra control (DRM) MS demands over your files.

It's been almost nine months since we first reported on Windows Vista's inability to copy, delete and move files without stalling indefinitely, and yet the problem continues.
Is it true that they won't sell Vista to a person that is too old and might die before before a file gets copied?
I wish I had the dough for a new PC with Vista, equipped with all of the highest speed parts, just to see if it is really true what they say about it.
I saw a nice one for $4300, but the DW said,
"over my dead body".
To which I said, "Offer ACCEPTED"...BANG.
Now where is that order form?

This is also a problem for MS- though they don't build the drivers, they just provide the software "hooks" for the makers to build them, but...
The OS I use will run on *far, far* more hardware than any Windows version- everything up to an IBM S/390- from http://www.us.debian.org/releases/stable/:
Quote: The following computer architectures are supported in this release:
* Alpha
* AMD64
* ARM
* HP PA-RISC
* Intel x86
* Intel IA-64
* MIPS (big endian)
* MIPS (little endian)
* PowerPC
* IBM S/390
* SPARC
