It will be interesting to see how expensive the little diesel will be and how much interest there will be in it.

So what is going to happen when someone takes their truck to Jiffy Lube to get the oil changed? Is a 20 year old alcoholic going to pee in the urea reservoir? Or is Dupont going to make it?

I was surprised to read that it will be a V8. For some reason I guess I assumed that the new light duty diesels would be V6's. It will also be interesting to find out how much it costs to replenish the urea at each oil change.

They picked the wrong time to come out with a diesel in a half ton. Maybe 3 years ago, this would have really took off.
I do not foresee people paying over $1 per gallon more for diesel, more for oil changes, maintenance, and more money for the initial purchase price of the diesel engine.
I no longer think that people really care that a diesel engine will get them to the top of the mountain 15 seconds faster than a gas engine. At $4.10+ for diesel vs the price of gasoline, that point is out the window unless you quite literally have money to burn.
Those that really have the money to spend and want a diesel will most likely buy a 3/4 ton or larger. Price is not much a factor to them.
Not going to be many takers in todays market.

I've wondered for years why Ford did not put a 6 cylinder diesel in the F150, would have been a hot item up till now. Unless things change I believe this will be a white elephant, not worth it anymore.

It will be interesting to see if it will sell. If not Ford will take a beating, if it does they will be the cutting edge. Now those that live on the towing edge and pull big loads with a 1/2 ton will be emboldened even more.

2010.5 that means it should be out begining of calendar 2010. So we have about 2 years to see how the diesel price behaves, and what other technologies will be in works. 20 % better than 5.4 Triton: if the gas motor gets lets say 14 mpg, the diesel will yield maybe 17, not impressive for me. 23-25 mpg would be nice. As somebody said above, wait and see the premium price for the diesel option.

Quote: At last week's dealer show in Las Vegas, a picture of Ford's upcoming 4.4-liter V8 diesel powerplant was leaked to the Internet... ouch. The new powerplant is hardly a secret (we were reporting the first hints of it in June 2006, and the legal issues surrounding the engine in June 2007), but this is the first time the public has seen a photo of the new diesel in its metallic flesh.
Designed to offer comparable acceleration to the current 5.4-liter gasoline Triton, the new engine should be rated at about 330 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy is expected to be around 20% better than the gas-fed Triton. To meet tough emission standards, a NOx after-treatment called "aqueous urea" will be injected into the hot exhaust stream. While the additive cleans up the tailpipe exhaust, it will also be another fluid the consumer will have to maintain (Ford is promising the "urea tank" will only need replenishing during oil changes). Although it doesn't look very attractive sitting naked on a stand atop the garish hotel carpet, you had better get used to seeing this V8 around town. Ford is saying that after a debut in the F-150 midway through the 2010 model year, we can expect the engine to follow in the Expedition, Navigator, E-Series vans, and F-Series SuperDuty.

With the high price of the diesel option and diesel fuel compared to five years ago a diesel has lost it's cost adavantage over a gas engine. They also lost mpg with 2008 diesel emission regulations and 2010 emission regulations will not help.
