For 600 dollars I would tell them where to shove the trailer. Heck for a grand you can put a set of good tires on Michelin XPS Rib

donn0128...First, a set of Goodyear G614's cost over $1,200. The $600 is the difference between the "china bombs" and the cost of the better tire...it's an upgrade, pure and simple, like getting better counter tops, or carpeting. etc. The buyer decides which items they want to pay for to make their unit what they want.

Secondly, his trailer takes G rated tires, Michelin doesn't make a G rated tire in the XPS rib!

Apparently Heartland stepped up and took care of their customer...more than most manufacturers would do.

Not that it any longer makes any difference. However in today's economy and with all of the manufacturers hurting why not tell them to shove it if they will not install a quality tire under a 60 thousand dollar fifth wheel? I certainly would. This is just another example of manufacturers trying to get away on the cheep. and as long as we (the buying public) allow it they will continue to shove junk down out throats and then whine and complain that they are losing business to foreign competetion. As a prime example just look at the American auto industry of the 60's. All they made were poor quality hugh boats and when the gas crunch hit the Japanese came in with small inexpensive quality, and cars people snapped them up. End result, the American auto industry went into a hole that they are trying to dig themselves out of.

Donn: Now you're just making sense!! I couldn't agree more.

Kakampers: I think it is despicable that someone who pays good money for a rig should have to "upgrade" to a safe set of tires. What about the consumer who is not aware of the lousy tires "some" manufacturers use. The consumer should be able to presume a rig is at least, safe to run down the road. JMHO

No more "despicable" than a car company that offers upgrades to anti-lock braking systems instead of their standard braking system...you have to pay a premium for that too; otherwise known as "options" or "optional equipment". Some are gingerbread, however, quite a few are safety related items.

There are thousands of consumers who've had no problem whatsover with the tires that manufacturers are using as standard on their units; china bombs or not! If a consumer doesn't feel safe with the tires offered, he has the option to pay for an upgrade...

Manufacturers are in business to make a profit. Some are trying to produce a good quality product at a reasonable price. Trying to make every higher quality item "standard" on their units is why some manufacturers have priced themselves right out of the market altogether.

Kakampers: Anti-lock or not...they still stop the car. Anyway, this is about rv's. A reasonable price is great, providing the unit is safe. There have been more than a few isolated issues with tires on the bighorn product. You must not have felt confident with these standard "China bombs" as you call them. Otherwise you would not have shelled out $1200.00 for the "upgrade". It would be a cold day before I bought another rig that came "standard" with safety concerns. Made that mistake once before. Learned a valuble lesson and moved onward and upward.

UPDATE: After e-mailing Heartland about my concerns with the tires, they worked with me and the issue is now resolved. I'm very happy with the outcome. I don't want to go into all of the details but will say that my Bighorn will have the Goodyear Marathon tires on it! I would like to thank everyone who worked with us at Heartland on this issue. Actually overall purchasing this RV has been a good experience.

Are you sure they said Goodyear Marathons?

It would make good business sense to make good on a statement made by an employee. They will still make lots of money even if they don't charge the extra money for the tires. IMHO it makes more sense to make a deal then lose a customer that will tell hundreds how unhappy they are. From what I understand Heartland is one of the better manufacturers around. But all of the industry has to pay attention to what is said here about tires. If they are made in China they are junk. It doesn't seem to matter what brand they are. If I was buying a new trailer I would only be happy if they were not only a good brand, but that they are made in someplace other then China.

Sanderson.66...You're right, I was not comfortable with the "china bombs" that came on my Bighorn. After watching them closely, and then they developed bubbles, I replaced them with Goodyear G614's. Heartland was willing to replace my tires, they were not however, willing to go the full cost of the Goodyears, and that's what I insisted on. So, they worked with me and, we too came to a fair remedy for both parties.

It was mine and others situation that brought about the decision of offering the Goodyear upgrade. When we bought that wasn't even available. They could have just raised the price by adding on the cost of the much more expensive tire, however, they decided to try and find a better, more affordable standard tire...remember they are a business!

Chinese tires or not...like I said, there are thousands who are still using the original tires without any issues. You only hear about the ones who had problems. If you think Heartland is the only one who uses tires made in China, think again! It's getting harder and harder to even find a tire made in the US.

I'm glad you like your Jayco...I LOVE my Bighorn and Heartland!! You may have moved on but I wouldn't necessarily say upward!!
