I recently made a reservation for a State park in the Florida Keys. I was planning to stay ten nights. I could not book a reservation at the same site for ten days, but I was able to book it by staying on one site for six days and four on another site in the same park.

My plans changed and I had to cancel my reservation. Florida State Parks considers this two reservations, even though it is a contiguous stay, and charge me two $10 cancellation fees. When I inquired about it, they stated that if you make a reservation for one month and have to break it into 5 different sites in order to stay, you have to pay 5 cancellation fees if you cancel.

I think that I should only have to pay one cancellation fee since it was really going to be one stay, but since the same site wasn't available, it had to split it into two sites.

Do you think this is a fair policy? I'm not sure if only Florida States Parks do this, or everyone and I just have to encounter it now.

Whether it's fair or not is relative...you don't think it is, but Florida disagrees. Colorado does the same thing. I had to split a reservation between two sites last year and they charged two change fees to modify it later.

i quess you could look at it as, at least i'm only out 20, some setups will not refund anything. but i am on you side for what's its worth......i believe that if the site rents out, no harm no foul no loss.....

Actually you are making two reservations, therefore two cancellations.

Yes, I agree $20 is nothing -- besides, what if someone else was trying to get a spot there? Very reasonable charge.

You wanted ten days, you could only find a site for six days so you made a reservation. Then you looked for another site for the other 4 days and found a site and you made another reservation. I am sure that you had to make this transaction two different times, one for 6 days and one for 4 days. You made TWO reseverations so you have to cancel TWO reservations. Since you could not get ONE reservation for 10 days, your other option was to go somewhere else where you could get ten days in a row or do what you did, make two reservations and change sites in mid week. It's a bummer that you had to cancel in the first place but that's the chance we take when we have to plan so far in advance and deal with a State Park.

Its fair you made two reservations. It is only $10.00 dollars that has you upset
not worth it.

To me this is a small issue for a big benefit. I love these CG reservations systems such as Reserve America or Recreation Gov. I have several visits planned through August. One is an add on at the same CG that I decided after making the original reservation -- so I'll be in the same boat if we decided to cancel that trip - that's just the way it is.

We all do our best at finalizing things but must plan for the worst. But a $10 -- even 20 cancellation fee is nothing compared to what happens with reservations @ some private CGs where you don't know what you are going to get -- have to do it all over the phone (maybe), pray they recorded correctly, wait for snail mail for confirmation (or rely on your credit card receipt) - they all handle it differently so then you are making notes about the policy for each one. Talk about confusing.

Fair or not, I just went through the same thing here in Ca.
I reserved two sites for one week and two sites for another week a month later and had to cancel.
With the booking fee's that Reserve America charged and the 4 cancelation fees, it cost me $60.00 to not go camping.
I can't complain, though, because I knew that this was the policy.
