We have driven to Alaska numerous times but have yet to drive down to Haines. We have driven to Skagway & taken the ferry across to Haines but are wondering if it is worth the trip to drive to Haines with fuel costs being what they are?? Opinions please. Thanks.

If you have already been to Haines I see no reason to go back. There is not a whole lot to see there in the summer aside from Fort Seward.

The drive in and out of Skagway is far more spectacular than the drive between Haines and Haines Jct.

Since you have driven to Alaska before, I would definitely recommend a drive down to Haines from Haines Junction or to Skagway, ferry over to Haines and drive to the Jct. It has some great scenery, not like Skagway's drive as mentioned but beautiful none the less. Plus when I see a road I have never driven, I get this urge to take a look at it. Haines is much more laid back than Skagway, even in the camping atmosphere, IMHO. I can enjoy camping in Haines for several days just to relax and enjoy. It has been many years since I drove from/to Haines from the Jct. but the next trip just might include it again. Last trip, 2006, we did the drive down to Atlin which we hadn't done in many years.
Roads not driven are much like sins not committed, in my opinion. Seldom do I regret the ones driven, to the ones not driven. Just like the sins not committed, should I have, for there is always forgiveness? LOL

There are nice Canadian parks along the road. We are kayakers so we like them a lot. The Haines Jct. to Haines road has always given us the most bear sightings. We only drove the whole road to Haines and back once but have stayed at parks along the road and done day trips to see wildlife several times. The mountain pass along the road is very spectacular if there is snow and the story behind the road is interesting (the way they used to do the checkpoints.) Going south after the pass is not great but Haines is one of our favorite towns and we like to go there although not always by road.
Taking a flightseeing trip out of Haines up to Glacier Bay is an Alaska trip highlight.

Personally, we think the drive to Haines is more spectacular that the drive down to Skagway! And Haines is one of our favorite places in Alaska. Try to time your arrival for the Southeastern Alaska State Fair...lots of fun!

Not much to do or see in Haines? What about the two state parks? What about all the Eagles? What about fishing? It's a good place for taking the fast ferry down to Juneau for a day trip.

The last time we were in Haines, we spent 11 days there! Our favorite place to camp is at Salmon Run Campground out past the ferry terminal. No hookups, but the view is fantastic! You can watch the ferries dock and leave the ferry terminal, and at night you can watch the cruise ships coming down the inlet from Skagway all lit up like Christmas trees!

Joe B hit the nail on the head. If you see an Alaskan road, take it. It likely won't be as long as the road you took from home to get there so why not? No arguing Whitehorse to Skagway isn't beautiful. It is. But so is the junction to Haines. Get the whole Alaska experience. Drive it and enjoy. We stayed last year at the CG in downtown. It's a bit tight but the dungeness crabs there are worth it. And it's just a walk to town.

If you haven't done the Haines to Haines Jct. road, do it. we did in 86 and will again this Summer. we were early season so didn't see a lot of wildlife, but the scenery was spectacular, very unique. We took our time, pulling a 5th wheel at the time. WE pulled over a few times just to take it all in. at that time there was still some snow on the ground, and it was like a whole nother world, but we loved it. and if you get to see it with the sun out, even better. we did see our first Alaskan Moose, mother with twins. keep your eyes out. if there is a road drive it. too much to miss otherwise.
