4600 kilos is 10141 lbs. Luckily my trailer grosses out at 10074 or 4570 kilos. I've thought about getting an endorsement but why give money to the government that I don't have to.

To my knowledge only Alberta and Quebec don't require a license change to pull a trailer over 4600 KG (10,000#). All other provinces do. I know that I had to obtain a 1G license in Saskatchewan.

I'm not sure but probably - call the MTO and see what they say.
Breaking news...
After many years of consideration the MTO has finally recognized that a full Class A license is overkill for those towing RV's with light or even medium duty pickups. They apparently used their time machine and announced (on April 21, 2008 - go figure) the creation of a new Restricted Class A license for those who show up for their test in a vehicle without a manual transmission and air brakes. The new license will be effective June 16, 2008.
Clicky for details ...

wilber1,
I don't mean to rain on your parade but imagine this:
You are in an accident someday and the insurance investigator decides to weigh your rig and that time you just happen to weigh 10984 so they deny your insurance and you end up carrying the other guy's liability - personally. Its a pretty simple step to get the RV endorsement - I can't imagine why someone in your situation wouldn't just get it done. Personally I have had a 1A for over 20 years and despite the fact that it costs a little to maintain it I have never regretted having it.

bobofthenorth,
In BC it is GVW that is measured, not actual. You could have a 5000 GVW, be 5001 pounds and be in the same predicament. However negligence doesn't mean you're not covered. Just at fault There are some caveats like drunk driving etc. but read your rules carefully.

bobofthenorth,
In that case my trailer would be loaded 910 LBS over its GVWR. I'm sure that would be enough if they wanted to try and deny coverage no matter what license I had, although I doubt they could. I am licensed for the rated weight that I tow, plus I've weighed my trailer loaded and it comes in at around 9600 give or take a couple of hundred pounds. I hope we aren't applying the 80% rule to licensing now.
I applaud your getting the rating and wouldn't suggest that anyone not get it. I've taken advanced driving courses myself, they are lot of fun and plan another this summer. I just don't see the point in paying for licensing I don't need.

I hope this is the case Rick P. If not it looks like a person would have to have a full fledged class A to pull a large 5th. Can't imagine there are many pulling 5er's that have their A. Am I to understand a road test is necessary? Went onto MTO web site, but it was not very helpful. A bureaucratic hoop to jump through (read as money grab) just to go camping? In response to OP...NO!
