We're in the planning stage for a trip to the NE this fall. Part of our route will be from Middlebury, VT to Arcadia NP during the period October 2 to 8. Looking for fall color routes, interesting stops, recommendations on campgrounds. etc. We probably will leave Arcadia and follow the Maine coast back towards Boston area on our return to Iowa. Thanks.
When you are near Middlebury look for the Morgan Horse Farm, worth seeing. Then go to Burlington see Lake Champlain, University of Vermont, UVM, Universtity of Green Mountains.
Then east on Rt 2 and follow 2 all the way to Maine. You will see the widest part of Vt 100 miles and the narrowest part of NH 50 miles through the White Mountains Franconia Notch, stop and climb by car or rail, Mt Washington, and then go thru North Conway NH. Great ride and on to Bangor Me to the Ocean. All the way you can sing" trailers for sale or rent, rooms to let 50 cents, no phone on food no pets,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,destination Bamgor Me. Don't forget LL Bean in Freeport Me on your way south. Bootbay Harbor, Me for great seafood.
Before you get to Vermont you should stop in the Lake George NY area, so much American revolutionary War stuff. Fort Ticonderoga. Whitehall, NY is the birthplace of the US Navy. If you come into VT on RT 4 you go through Rutland find Sewards Dairy, best ice cream in the whole wide world, ya can eat lunch there also. You should pass it on the right going north to Middlebury on Rt 7..
And after you leave Maine you will be talking funny.......

The main thing about camping in New England in late fall, if finding campgrounds that are open after October 1 or 15, which seems to be the two main dates that they close for the season.
Use Rt. 2 to come from the Vt., NH area to Maine, and then branch off to the Grafton Notch and Rangeley Lake areas. Beautiful scenery. If you can go to Moosehead Lake area/Baxter State Park, and then loop down to the coast you will have the best of Maine interior and coast. There are vehicle size restrictions for Baxter.
Beware, it is not ARcadia, but Acadia (no r). We Mainahs don't do r's! There are fewer campgrounds in the late fall, but usually there will be one somewhere near where you want to be, especially on the coast.
If you have any specific questions about attractions, roads, or campgrounds, feel free to PM me. Lifetime Mainer...been most everywhere here.
Where are you staying in the Middlebury area? Do you need suggestions?
Tallyo was right-on with his comments. I would be happy to provide more info about Middlebury and the Burlington area if you need it, ie restaurants, things to see, etc.
Suggestion for a campground near Acadia -- we love the Bar Harbor KOA. Try to reserve a waterfront site if you can. They are open until mid October.
On the way south toward Boston, make a stop in Camden, ME. It's a great little coastal town. One of our favorite restaurants is Waterfront, which is right on the harbor -- fantastic crab cakes! For a campground, we like Camden Hills RV Resort in Rockport.
Staying at Moose Hillock in Waren NH is a great place in New Hampshire. Also the Fryburg Fair - in Maine - close to North Conway NH, which has GREAT shopping and the North Conway Railroad, which another poster mentioned, is usually on that weekend - great fair and lots of fun.
