We stay in the primitive campgrounds for lake access. Most cascade lakes have campgrounds near them but little opportunity for dispersed camping.

I did notice Wickiup reservoir seemed to have some of those and may be worth checking out.

A designated campground will often have picnic tables, some campfire rings, and some one-holer outhouses. If you don't need these things don't stay in a fee site.

Some have garbage service. Some also have water.

We can't camp in primitive campgrounds because we don't have a gray tank. I've seen a few that I wouldn't mind staying in.

Lack of a gray tank doesn't necessarily rule out primitive campgrounds. It's at least worth asking.

Sometimes we'll stay in the NFS CG rather than use dispersed camping just so we have a little more privacy!! There are several places we go where so many people are boondocking in every available space, it's actually less crowded in the CG!

"If you use the campgrounds, why and what advantages do they offer?"

Main advantages, Water,Electric without running the generator,Dump station,& you are almost guarenteed NOT to get stuck.
Do you NEED all this, no, are they nice to have sometimes, absolutely.

Primitive Campgrounds don't have electricity or dump stations. Most don't have water, and none have it to each site.

Exactly, the OP asked about "Campgrounds" I assumed they were talking about designated campgrounds, not primitive camping areas.

We often camp in an area with FS campground and also dispersed camping.

The FS campground has vault toilets, garbage service, and water.

If we are going to be there more than 3-4 days we usually opt for the campground.

The OP said "Primitive Campgrounds"

Most people think that means forest service or similar campgrounds that cost from $5 to $12 a night and have designated parking spaces and maybe a few amenities.

Once it has electricity, it's no longer a primitive campground.

OK, so what is a "primitive campground" to you?

To me anything with water and power is a developed campground. Central water is borderline developed. Pit toilets for the tenters are still primitive.
