Sometime your generator can be appreciated by tenting folks!
We were primitive camping in a National Forest Park, and the only other folks who moved in were a couple with two small children in a tent. They took the site next to us on the water's edge. We chatted and got friendly, and about bedtime the wind and slight rain started. They were cold and damp and having a tough time getting the kids to bed down.
We offered to fire up our genny and run a cord over with our small box heater for them for a few hours if they wanted. They gratefully accepted! We agreed to turn it off about 11pm. We let it run for a few hours and they were warm, kids got snuggly asleep, we got our batteries topped off and watched tv while the rain drizzled and everyone was happy.
In the morning, they greeted us with fresh perked coffee over the campfire and a box of donuts to share. The day dawned bright and sunshiney and all were happy again.

There's no need to be amazed. It's just that those people have have a different life(camp)style than you guys.
When I say I'm amazed, what I'm amazed at is how inconsiderate of fellow campers some people can be. It has nothing to do with a "different life(camp)style".
We always pick dispersed camping if it's available.
If I can hear your generator and it bothers me I'll move. Ain't truck campers great?
I think many generator owners are very hard of hearing and want to be at home, not camping.
We have a generator yet only used it two evenings on our 2008 winter to spring 87 day trip. Ain't solar panels great?

I'm not at all amazed at how inconsiderate people can be. That's why I boondock out in the middle of nowhere.
