We are making plans to go to Fort Wilderness next January. We will be going the 2nd week. My wife is afraid that it will be too cold for the kids to use the swimming pools in the campground. Has anyone been there in January and is it warn enough to swim? Thanks for your help.

January tends to be a little chilly and rainy here in the Central and Northern parts of the Sunshine State! I live north of Orlando and we are usually not swimming in January. Sometimes it is warm enough but I would not count on it.

We were at Disney in early March this year and it was too cold for swimming. In 2006 we went in early December and we froze too. I'm beginning to believe that we either bring cold weather with us...
On the positive side however, there were no crowds at all. We didn't stand in a line for more than just a few minutes during each of our last two visits.

We were there over New Years week this year. It was in the 60's the week before our trip, the 40's and 30's during our trip and back to the 60's and 70's the week after. But that is just my luck, none.

Usually, it will be too cold to swim in an unheated pool in January. There are heated pools at other Disney resorts (I think the Boardwalk Resort has one), but you can't "officially" use those pools unless you stay there. Officially.

If you are going to Disney World in January not being able to use the pool should not be high on the list of things to worry about. Bring the kids bikes and turn them loose if they have enough energy after touring all day.
Don't forget the recommended order to see the sights; Epcot, Animal Kingdom then Magic Kingdom. If you do the MK first the others will be BORING to the kids.

We went this January and we had two great pool days with temps in the 80's and humid. They said this year was unseasonably warm. I say dont worry about it that is the lowest crowd times of the year. PM if you want to know more! We are going to the FT this October and think it will be warm enough for the pool as well.

I wouldn't count on being able to use the pools in January. We've been to Central Florida 10 times (10 seperate years and not necessarily consecutive) and we've NEVER had nice weather in January. We usually had 60s with a fridgit north west wind and it was cold. I'd say over the years if I collectively had 1 week in the lower 70s it would be pretty accurate. We've also had many days where we hit a cold snap and the weather was in the 50s and we even froze in the parks.
Yet we have friends who've gone in January and had warm weather. My husband's colleague went with his family and had low to mid 70s the whole week. We also know people who've been cold. In fact last year one of my daughter's class mates came back early because she said that she could freeze "her butt off for free up here." She had said that out of the week and a half she was there they were only able to walk in their T-shirts for a 1/2 a day. The same applies to February. It's just a roll of the dice but I definitely wouldn't count on warm weather.
We quit going in January and have gone in March for the last few years. We were there the beginning of March this year (2full weeks) and it was a little cooler than previous years. There were maybe 3 or 4 days where it was too cool to swim (still nothing like January's cold snaps and there was only one really cold day the day that the big storms hit across Canada and the US) but the other 10 days were fine. Our little girl swam for two hours each day without being cold and we went to Typhoon lagoon as well. Overall March has been great for us.
You'd think that as Canadians 50s and 60s would feel balmy to us in January when we have 10s and 20s. However, for some reason when there's a winter cold snap in January there's no getting warm. It's colder there in the 60s then if it's in the 60s here in the spring. Maybe it's the wind.
I know the crowds are lower, but I don't enjoy spending a lot of money still having to wear coats and jackets and still feeling cold. Sure the crowds are obviously bigger the beginning of March but it's still a lot more pleasant. We went to WDW this year and didn't wait in line more than 20 min. for most rides, we only had to use a front of the line pass once. That's not too bad. Same with Typhoon lagoon, it was 78 degrees when we went and didn't wait for any slide more than 10 minutes. Things are so smoothly run in those parks. I guess the parks up here could use a lesson from the Disney Parks. Talk about waiting in line because of being unorganized.
I'm sure there are times where it's an unmanagable zoo like at Easter and Christmas (We did that once too.) But, anyway, just don't count on nice weather in January. Just my opinion.
