We went to Myrtle Beach to visit my daughter for spring break last month and finally got around to see how much I spent. I bough around 212 gallons of gas the lowest was in Rock City SC for 3.04 and the most was 3.17 a gallon. I averaged 8.0 mpg with my Ford V10 pulling a 4,600 pound Trailblazer. My best tank was 9.2 a lot of going down the hills the worst was 6.4 going up the hills . I spent around 700 dollars in gas and we are Coast to Coast Members so our camping fees where 60 dollars for 6 days . We had to go to Ocean Lakes for two days at a cost of 100 dollars because we could not get into our Resort In North Myrtle Beach over Easter . So For 8 days it cost us 160 dollars for our lodging and 700.00 in gas for a grand total of 860.00 dollars. We ate breakfast and dinner in the coach and only went out for dinner. We had check out flying because I got so much gruff from the guys at work about the gas prices. This is what we found out to tickets for me and the wife was close to 600.00 dollars . Then for a nice motel was at least 150 to 200 a night . Rental car 200 for the week small car. a grand total of 2,000 dollars figuring 200 a night for a ocean side room. I have not even figured three meals a day for both of us. I know gas has went up again but what are your going to do just let the coach sit and deprecate in the drive way. I know it hurts every time you go to fill up at the pump for me it is 75 gallons. But to give it all up just because of gas is not the answer. We are in the planning stages to go to the outer banks in NC and even if gas gets to 4.00 a gallon it would be maybe another 100 dollars in gas . Am I going to let the coach sit for the summer for 100 dollars more in gas. I think you have to look at the big picture and all the cost of ownership before you dry dock your coach. Also we have a 8 pound poodle that my wife will not leave home with out him .I still think that traveling in a motor coach is the only way to travel and am loving every mile. Also for all you Elvis fans he is doing fine at Myrtle Beach as we saw him at one of the shows, ha ha and we did not leave till we heard that Elvis has left the building.

We're leaving for Alaska in June and will be gone for 4 months. I've been using your rational with my DW & all the nay sayers.

Great trip. I am heading to Myrtle Beach in a few weeks to stay at Pirateland. I am in NY and last fall it cost me about $600 for gas. As of yesterday it was $3.79 a gallon. Who knows what it will be in two weeks, but even if it's $5.00 a gallon I will be going. Have been camping since 1975 and if I add up all the money I have spent on camping, one trailer and five motorhomes I'm sure I could have gone around the world first class a few times. But I still won't give it up. Just a way of life for me.

Good stuff, we are planning at trip from Arizona to Ohio to visit the relatives and I really don't think flying is the answer. RVing to us the best way to go, you see the sites, have your own bed and I really think in the long run it is better than flying.

We recently took a trip to Lancaster, Pa for one of our annual RV.net gatherings. Our kids, ages 12 & 18 also went - BY CHOICE. Our 12 y/o also brought a friend along.
The fuel bill was somewhere around $400 I guess and I don't know what the rest was - and don't care.
My point; 4 days with friends & family, 4 days of continuous laughs & fun, 4 days of life long memories - PRICELESS.
There are 24 hours in every day - it all depends on how you choose to use them.

I really enjoyed reading your post! Thank you for sharing it with us.
We just returned from a trip from NY to Va. Beach and the gas cost us $400. Our campground cost us $42 a night so we didn't do as well as you but we still had a good time. I agree with you that we can't let the RV sit in the driveway - the road calls us!

We are planning our trip to FL where we have a time share in the keys for two weeks. Driving is still cheaper and more relaxing. To fly 3 of us to Ft. Lauderdale (southwest) with a rental car (2 weeks) food and beverage would cost about $2,500.00. Not to mention that my daughter friend would have to buy there own ticket - or we would have to buy it. To drive the RV 3000 mile round trip at 3.75 per gallon at approx 9 mles per gal. (that is what we averaged xmas week) would be $1,200.00 plus we will add $500.00 is mis. costs just to be fair. that is $1,700.00. We bring enough food to last us most of the two week period and we a lot of our friends leave the resort after the week we usually would up taking more food home than we bring. We found a place to store the RV for $75.00 and are thinking about using the savings to purchase a tow bar for our HHR. The food and rental car are the items that kill us. Last year we got a compact car for $223. for the week and would up paying with all the additional costs close to $350. We love the relaxation of traveling in the RV and the it does save us money. The most important thing is that we make memories that are unsurpassed.

When the couple who bought our MH (at a real steal) are paying $1.00 a mile for gas we will be paying 0.25 per mile in our Civic as we travel to our Class PM (Park Model). When they are paying $2.00 a mile we will be paying $0.50 a mile. 4.00 and 1.00, 8.00 and 2.00 etc etc Eventually we will be unable to travel at all for more reasons then one. LOL
