We are in the tentative planning stages for a trip on the Alcan. We would like to get an older version of Milepost. Where should we look? Our local used bookstore has none. Thanks.

Not that there is much change from year to year why would you want to buy an old one that is out of date for one that is new. Last time we looked a new one was about $29. No idea on the price of an old one if you can find it.

I have always donated my old Mileposts to our local Friends of the Library. That said, you can buy a current year's issue for between $17 and $20. Try buy.com or amazon. While there, check for the Church's book on Alaska.

You can find used ones on ebay most of the time. Or you can Google the year and the word, Milepost (such as 2006 Milepost) and get listing on available ones or just buy a new one as mentioned above. Normally less than $20 plus shipping from many book sellers, Amazon, Borders, Barnes and Noble, etc.

Compared to the overall cost of driving the Alaska Hwy., a new Milepost is a drop in the bucket. I have two or three old ones around that are good for general reference, but a new one will tell you where the construction areas are, and a gas station that was open last year may be boarded up this year, etc., the mile to mile info. is quite accurate.
If it's your first trip, I'd recommend a new one.

I've come across many slightly used ones in my travels - used them occasionally but find them tedious and have discarded 5 or 6 of them. I do fine wihout one by using visitors center information and I would never pay for a new one. However, the farther north you go the more valuable and rare used copies become.

I bought one two years ago and then cut out all the maps and laminated them. I then bought a new one last year for our trip. We really liked the laminated maps.

Buy the current edition for updates on closings, campground, construction, and such. The old one may be close, but when you are running low on fuel close doesn't cut it.

I got a year-old version last year at half.com for less than half price. Considering how long ahead of time the current version is put together, I can't see any advantage to paying twice as much. JMO!
