We are planning to go to Black Hills in June staying at Rafter J. We are considering extending the trip for a few days and going on to Medora and go to Theordore Roosevelt National Park-South Unit. We will probably never make this trip again, so do you think it is worth the extra days and 400+ extra mile round trip from Hill City to Medora? Thanks.

We visited Teddy Roosevelt NP in 2000. We truly enjoyed it. In our opinion, the badlands of ND are prettier than the ones in SD. Plus, I loved visiting a park that few people have seen. Will we go back? If it's convenient, we probably will. But I'm glad we went. If you go, be sure to see the Medora Musical. We didn't see it. After we left the park we learned how popular it is. Maybe next time.

Especially if you're not likely to pass that way again, go. If you can dry camp, the CG inside the park is nice. We woke up to a couple young buffalo grazing in our site - just beyond our awning!

While there just to the west about 5 miles is Chateau de Mores State Historical Site a mansion built by a French cattle baron for his wife often missed but worth a visit. Have fun

We enjoyed seeing the wild horses in the South Unit. Plus we went up to the North Unit for a couple days of dry camping which was great with the buffalo right in the campground. We found Medora at the South Unit a little too commercial for our tastes, but if you like a lot of quaint shops, then it is the place to see.

Because of the distance involved we probably won't get there again, but am so glad we stayed at the North Unit CG. No h/u but nice sites and bathrooms, and having bison wander through the CG was great!
If you go that far, and I really think you should, stop in at Ft. Union Trading Post NHS if you are into history and the Missouri-Yellowstone Confluence Interpretive Center is worth a stop too.
The morning we left we stopped for a late breakfast in Killdeer, ND at a little place called "My House" just off the main drag in town. One of my best breakfasts ever and the conversation with the owner(?) while we ate was great. She was a really nice lady named Enid who was a one person ND travel promotion agency.

If you can squeeze it in, go to the North Unit as well.
