You say "use your eyes and ears and you will not need paranoia". That is exactly what those opposed to the situation have done. They have read and checked things out and based on what they have seen made a decision, one you don't agree with but one they are comfortable with.

Thats fine by me however if you look at Rays last post, the information used to make the decision was false information in the first place. So the OP got led astray and made to believe this campground was a sex offender haven for no reason.

I still think checking a sex offender registry before making camping reservations is paranoid. Do they check it before going to the store, mall, or other public places?

Go camping and make decisions how you choose, that is your choice, and be safe out there.

I just want to say we stayed at this campground 2 years ago and had planned to go back. It is close to home and the kids had fun at the playground and pool. Once I heard a sex offender worked there I emailed the campground and this is the response I received:

Thank you very much for your concern and looking out for us. Yes, *** does work for us. It was brought to my attention over a year ago about his record and I
immediately went to him and wanted information. He was very open with me and even provided court documents. The incident happened in 1990 (the one and only incident). He was just newly divorced at the time and was with a girl who lied about her age to him. He was very humble and still agrees he was in the wrong...he was the adult. Tim is now remarried and has two adorable little boys ages 4 yrs and 18 months and he is a very good Daddy. He knows this will follow him forever and has even told me if he has to leave so it doesn't hurt me he will.. If I thought for ONE MINUTE Tim was a threat to ANYONE, he would not be here, I love this campground very much and it has been part of my life for 30 years and you the campers are what keeps me going. *** is a good guy who made a stupid mistake almost 20 years ago. I truly hope you don't stop coming to our campground. Thanks again for taking the time and writing to me.

Based on this email from the owner we decided to NOT go back. I realize that predators are everywhere but I will avoid them when I can. I am not comfortable with my children playing at the playground and swimming at the pool with a child pervert around. Duncan's calls themself a FAMILY campground. Somehow FAMILY & Child Sex Offender do NOT go together.

with this response you still decided not to go back? sort of similar to the case I knew about where the 17 year old had romance with a 15 year old or some such many years ago.
As I have said in the past, even paranoids have real enemies.
some times it is themselves.

Did you know in some states if your caught urinating in public you have to register as a sex offender.

I would bet that almost every person on the sex-offender list has a tale about some girl lying about her age. Believe them if you want to. I don't consider myself paranoid, and I don't check the registry before I go places. And I always supervise my children when camping. But if I hear about a sex offender staying at a campground, I steer clear. To me it would not make sense for me to take my business to a campground that would employ a sex offender. Campgrounds should be refuges for families, not predators.

I would bet there are campgrounds with unregistered sex offenders working and staying there. If there are none registered will that make it safe. Watch your children.

OH, OH!!!
as a public service, if anybody wants to email me with their proposed itinerary with dates and campgrounds I will advise you if I will be there so you can avoid staying at the same campground as I do since I probably have violated this "sex crime" but not been caught at it.
Of course like the fella at Duncan's this probably happened 18 years ago.

With that response we did decide to NOT go back. First off the guy was about 35 when the offense occured. That is NOT the same as a 17 year old and a 15 year old. How do I know if what this owner says is true? Or if the papers he showed her are true?

I may go to campgrounds and other places where I do not know about sex offenders. But I will NOT go if I do know. Sorry I don't want my kiddos running around a pool with a known perv lurking around.

If I owned a FAMILY campground I wouldn't hire a CHILD sex offender. I don't really care if he is a good daddy now.
