I am thinking of buying a new travel trailer and was wondering wether it is best to trade the old one or sell it on my own.
I would be interested in knowing how others have made out.
Thanks,

NanciL, I think this is a trying time to sell a TT or any RV. I have advertised my 2004 TT in several places during the past two weeks with very little results. Sure would like to find a buyer as I would like to upgrade to something a bit larger. I have been working with RVDirect and they have what I want in DesMoines but need to sell mine first. I've shipped an E mail offer off to a local dealer but I'm not holding my breath on them responding in my favor.

You need to look at the cost to you in time and energy in trying to sell it yourself. I don't like dealing with those that just want to look and haggle and aren't serious buyers.
You also need to look at the difference in what you would have to pay in sales taxes if you pay outright or use your trade as a down payment vs what you can get for your RV by selling it yourself..

This spring we decided to sell our TT and get a 5th wheel, I had the trailer listed on kijiji, and craiglist it was gone within 3 days and we got what we wanted for it this TT was an '04, 19' mallard.
Now on the other hand my parents are trying to sell their '92, 26' Terry fifthwheel it is awsome shape, but they had listed it on all kinds of websites but not 1 bite. But my dad keeps saying some one is born for it to buy. sometimes it sell quick and other times not so, and be patient.

I stuck mine in the yard with a sign and did a local paper Ad, sold in 2 weeks for my price. You will usually come out better selling private if you can wait.

Sold our TT last year on Craigslist. May have taken two weeks and got NADA "High Retail". I am normally a trade-in person, but it was simple. You will alway get more selling yourself.
Good luck,

You will get more selling yourself because you can get retail vs wholesale trading in.
On the other hand I have not sold anything myself for many years. It is just not worth the hassle to me. People making appts to see it and never show up. This is a real pain if the item is stored off site. Will their check clear? Is the bank check legit? Now the buyer knows your name, address and phone# which may or may not be OK. No thanks. It's worth the worry free trade in for me.
I have decided to sell my boat and not immediately replace it. I took it down to the dealer and he will sell it for me for $500. Worth every penny to me. JMHO Good Luck.

Just a piece of advice because of the horror story that we lived through selling our TT. Do NOT go by appearances of the "purchaser". Get the cash up front. We did not and ,boy, was that was a mess, finally got the money and rid of the trailer. We knew better but had a lapse. I would still say it is better to sell it yourself.

Dealer offered us 12.5k for our TT as trade, worth 22.5k. Their stance, if your buying wholesale then all we can offer you is a wholesale trade. Sold ours privately (via Ebay) in a week for 19.5K. Sell for the right price and make it attractive to a potential buyer and it'll fly out of your driveway, there are plenty of buyers out there-even with today's economy...Good Luck & Happy Camping

See what the dealer will give you trade wise after you lookup the value on NADA. If they give you a good deal without the trade, then take the deal and sell your old TT yourself.
