We are thinking of setting up in Texas. Are there any reasons that we might not want Texas for residence. I believe there is no state income tax, no sales tax on groceries. Insurance company says our insurance rates would be less. Just don't want to do this and then find out that there was a down side that I wasn't aware of. Thanks for the information.

There is sales tax on some groceries. There is no state income tax, and no personal property tax. By switching our residence from Virginia to Texas it lightened our tax burden by almost $7,000.

Downside to Texas: Annual vehicle inspections.
South Dakota is the best choice.

If you're planning to spend a lot of time in your 'home state', you can't beat Texas, IMHO.

Annual vehicle inspections IF you drive into Texas annually. My truck was last inspected in Texas 2 years ago and it might be 2 more before I cross the Texas border again. As a full time SKP out of Livingston I can not think of any downside to being a SKP Texan. Been one for six years now and may have spent a total of 3 weeks in Texas in all that time.

FYI only, and IMHO:
Health insurance can be more expensive than many other states if you procure it here. If you own real estate in Texas, the RE taxes are high too. Assuming you FT and do not own RE, or have other health insurance, both of those are moot.
Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away.

I renew our tags on line also you can renew your drivers license on line. State inspection is done when we get back into the state. Other states only care if your tags are up to date. Inspection is Texas problem. We get our mail through a kids house, so our insurance is from his address, but Escapees is outstanding. We have many friends who use them.

If you replace your vehicle, then Tx charges sales tax I think it is 6.25% now. I believe SD is 3% as is NM.
