Heart worm is from mosquitoes. Make sure your vet puts him on Heartguard or a similar product.

Some mosquitos carry heartworm - the dog should be on heartworm preventative such as Revolution, etc. Have him tested first tho - if he should all ready be infected, giving him the treatment could kill him. We were in AK during July & Aug and didn't have that much problem with mosquitos - perhaps in wooded areas, etc. it would be worse, maybe we were just lucky.

It does not say what type of dog you have..Long or Fine or No hair...On our dogs (short fine hair)we were worried about the different cemicals in repelents so we just whent with using "skin so soft" by avon. It worked well and the dogs smelled nice.

Oh and what they said about heart worm...I had hoped that all pet owners already know about that.

If you're crossing the border, you're little one must be in good health.

It's very clear that you need a rabies certificate. My vet recommends a health certificate.

Also be prepared for questions about dog food and get your dog on a kind of food you can buy on either side of the border. It doesn't happen every year, but border guards can confiscate pet food. If you dog is on a special diet, carry a prescription with you.

Mosquitoes. I have 70 lb girls. They spend much of their days out doors and while bellies seem to get lots of tell tale bite marks they get used to them. Keep your pal active and it will be less of a bother.

& I, I took the road less travelled by.

Mosquitoes, gnats, flies, etc. aren't much of a problem for our Golden Retriever because of his rather long hair. Accept right on his nose. The insect bites there actually left the top of his nose bloody at times. Just something to watch out for. The area around the eyes, nose and ears of dogs are very vulnerable for insect bites.

How big is your dog? The skeeters may carry a little guy off. Talk to your vet, update shots, carry a first aid kit, and if he is small stay away from Eagles!

Well I guess you can do all that for while in route but there is no Heart Worm, ticks or fleas in AK unless you bring them with you. Our two dogs have never had a problem with the bugs. One is 12, the other is 6. Eagles get a blamed but there are other critters to watch out for...coyotes, wolves, owls, porcupines, wolverines, badgers, lynx....you get the picture. But as long as you have them near you, hopefully leashed, should not be a problem

If you go to the woods with your dog bring a bag of dog plasma.
Those Alaskan state bird will suck you and the dog's blood dry.
Bugs spray is also nice to have there should be one that smells like
Old Spice :-)
The last time I remember I was infested with mosquitoes I was hiking at Thunderbird Falls.
Those bugs has proboscis adapters they go through your pants and it swells bad too.
My 5 YO nephew was left taking a nap in a motor home by Deep Creek
somehow the ME 109 got though and he looked like Mike Tyson just beat the******out of him. He lived and he's 21 now.
To me I can deal with the mosquitoes though I know there are no snakes in Alaska and that's a plus.
