The family and I have enjoyed tent camping at different campgrounds for a few years now, with the exception of having to wait in line at the shower houses. I see that some outfitters now sell "shower tents" with various types of heated water sources available.

My initial reaction is that campgrounds would cringe at the thought of shower tents being erected at the campsite. But I have no idea. Does anyone else use shower tents at a campground? Are they becoming common? Is there some sort of taboo about having one at your tent site? Any knowledge or experiences you can share about this would be appreciated. Thank you.

They are for boondocking or use at back-country campsites with no water or electric. IMHO there's no use for them in a campground with amenities.

Most CG's prohibit dumping gray water on the ground.

You'd have to check with each CG individually I'd think. I can only speak of my experience the NF CG's in the San Bernardino Mtns in So Cal. In 40 years of camping (and maybe 30 years of actually being old enough to pay attention to these types of things) never have I seen anyone chastised for dumping a little grey water on the ground. Now, that doesn't mean an RV dumping it's grey tank, that means a couple pots of dishwater dumped in a bush. Most tenters and Rangers/Hosts realize the basically zero impact on the environment that a gallon or two of water will have. No different for a solar shower. I suspect that doing nightly dishes takes more water than a quick solar shower and how many times have you done and/or seen dishwater thrown on the ground. Any rainstorm will have considerably more impact on the landscape than will a little dish or shower water with bio-soap. But, you may get some enviro-weenie who thinks that Mother Earth can't handle any human interaction with the land and will give you a hard time. So, like I said before, check with each CG individually.

Come to think of it, in all the times I've camped at the beach I've never seen anyone get into trouble for using their RV outside showers to rinse off the sand from the kids and such. In fact, now I'm thinking you should just go ahead and do it. In the off chance someone hassles you, just apologize. It's usually easier to get forgiveness than permission. Oh, and if I could get the wife and kids to tent camp with me, I'd be all over the Cabela's Deluxe shower and a porta-potty.

CG's in the Smoky Mtns have no showers, only cold water & toilets. They prohibit portable showers and will ask you to take it down.

I'd go right ahead and use it for that which it was intended. Unless your campsite would be subject to erosion, I'd turn the water on and start singing. Today's soaps are already reformulated to be biodegradeable and if the busybodies running the camp don't like it, they can come and tell you so. Good grief, we go to "get away from it all" and rules, rangers and radicals are certainly ruining it.

I bought the $20 outdoor shower tent for our portable toilet, as our camper does not have room to set it up inside.

Often a medical condition will make it difficult to walk the 200 feet to the bath house at 3AM, so this is how we manage that.

Amen,

Who gives a rat if it forms a nasty mud puddle for the next person in the campground.

If there are facilities available use them! I see no problem using one for port a potti. I'm looking at that for wife and 3 YO grandson. Just dispose of waste properly!!
