I want to install an outlet at home that will give me power for the trailer at home. I have been reading about this for a little bit and now slowly understanding it.

I bought my house the the previous owner had a 240 outlet in the garage for a kiln. I have not examined the outlet bu someone please clarify this for me:

If it is a 50 amp 120/240 outlet and is hot, can i just use a 50 amp tp 30 amp reducer plug the trailer straight into this? I am afraid to try but i may check the volts using a voltreader with this instructions (http://www.myrv.us/electric/).

that will give me the voltage, but how can i be sure of the amperage?

thanks for the help in advance

Check the breakers in your service panel since they should be labeled and might give you a start.

Yes, you can.

The outlet is more then likely 50a / 220v. Which is what you would have at a campground, so the adaptor will work fine.

If it ran a kiln and is 240 volts, then it has enough amperage for the RV. However, it sounds like you do not have the knowledge to experiment with electricity and to understand what is needed for your RV. PLEASE get someone who does. I am not slamming you- its OK not to understand electricity- its too big a risk of personal injury and property damage.

Maybe I'm confused, but my rig runs on 30amp 110 volt. I'm thinking the 220 volt will fry his rig. Am I wrong in thinking this?

thanks for the quick replies, guys.

wayne, it's not the knowledge, it's the experience/confidence that i don't got i just like to triple check my options before i move foward (especially with electricity)

i just wanted to get some quick feedback from some of ys'll just to make sure that i may already have the outlet and not do more work then i need to.

so, to check it does this sound right to ya'll?

A TRUE 50-amp Service is 120/240 Volt. In this Service the HOT leads (X & Y) come from L1 and L2 so when you check it the voltage between X and Y should be 240-Volt, X and W 120-Volt, Y and W 120-Volt, W and G 0-Volt. This service provides 12,000 watts

thanks again.

Stillonthepot:
Your last paragraph is correct.
Before you plug your rig in through the 50/30 adapter get a plug in tester to check for polarity. It will also smoke if it is wired in-correctly. Or use a volt-ohm-meter.

Sounds like you have it. Just remember that your 30 amp TT is NOT 240 VAC anywhere, so you only use ONE of the hot leads. Easy to check at adapter BEFORE plugging into TT.

Hemlox, The male plug is configured to pick up only 120 volts.
