Try to get someone with experience to do it.
Few things are as annoying as gear whine at highway speeds...which is one consequence if they aren't set up correctly.

This kind of work requires an experienced and fussy guy to do right. Look in Yellow Pages under drivelines. Parts counter people sometimes have some good leads; if the same names keep coming up that's a good sign.
I'd be inclined to go with 3.73.

It is not really that hard to swap them out if you have a dial indicator or you want to keep greasing the gear to check the wear pattern. Any dealer should have the personal to handle it. As said though I would look to a speed shop or 4x4 shop for price alone.

As for the price that sounds about right. When I bought my 2500 Chevy it had an open diff it cost me $1200 parts and labor at the dealer to have it changed to a G80 Eaton. As for ratio judging from the size of your trailer 4:10's

I am more confused than ever now.I called 4 different transmissioon shops today and they all told me the same thing. They said I should easily be able to tow 5000lbs without damaging my transmission they all said I shouldn't change to a different gear.I also called four ford dealerships the average price is about 1300 dollars for those that are interested in doing it.A couple didn't even seem interested at all.I am going to call the dealership back tommorrow that quoted me the 800 dollar price.I have decided if I get it done it will be at the dealership for 800 bucks if that was a correct price quote.

Andy,
I've got a 2004 F150, 4x4, 5.4ltr, optional factory towing pkg. Factory rear end gears were 3.55. I regeared mine about a year ago to 4.10 rear end. My TT has a dry weight of about 6500lbs. Huge improvement. It isn't like towing with a superduty but it is a very noticable improvement, especially when pulling in hills.
There has been a lot of good advice given on this thread. Personally, I would stay away from the Ford dealer for this project. Find a shop that specializes in drivelines, 4x4s, etc. Even if you have a 2wd (is it a 2wd or 4wd?), a driveline (not transmission) shop is the way to go. If it isn't done just right, you could experience some whining, shutter, etc. Driveline guys are who you want working on it. Being a 4wd, they had to do both front and rear on mine, cost right at $1300. If a 2wd, you should be able to get it done for $700-800.
Expect slightly less MPG with the lower gear. I've noticed about a 1MPG drop.
Also, ever notice all those F150s with rusted rear differential covers? Mine did that after the rear diff. got really hot and baked the paint off. I ordered this finned aluminum cover.. It has a temp. sensor port. I added a dual gauge pod and both a differential and transmission temperature gauge. That way I can keep an eye on the temps.
Just adding my $.02.

I bet they have never pulled a TT. Or felt the difference after a swap.

Did you try: (Yahoo yellow pages)
Tarheel 4-Wheel Drive Ctr
Address: 5745 N Tryon St, Charlotte, NC 28213
Phone: (704) 598-1000
They may not do service but if they sell gears I bet they know some that are good. Search out some jeep clubs etc.

If you have a 2 wd, I'd do it myself. Go to a salvage yard and get a third member from a wrecked truck with the 3.73 gears and do the swap yourself. Also get the correct speedo gear.
