Google will give you the actual mileage from city to city in the USA but not Mexico. Does anybody know of a resource for finding this information? As the road turns, not as the crow flys.
Thanks in advance.

Check the official Mexican highways site run by the SCT (Secretaria de Communicacion y Transportacion) SCT.
Click on the right side, "Traza Tu Ruta". It is in Spanish but easy to follow. Enter your origin state and city and then your destination state and city. Choose your transportation type and then click "consultar". Works to the km and the cost of toll roads too. I use it religiously.

We bought a map at a Pemex that lists mileage and Kilometers inbetween each major city in the Baja.
It was only $2 and was an awesome map to keep close at hand for quick refereance
I'll see if I can find the name of the map maker and see if they list a website.
Ok I got the map, it is called Club Cantamar - Baja California Road and Recreation Map. www.clubcantamar.com is their website
The map lists all roads with mileage inbetween, Pemex Stations and if they have diesel or gas, it shows Propane and loads of other amenities.
Kayaking, fishing, diving, Whale Watching ...etc
It's worth the $2 it cost and held up fine with a glossy coating on it.
If you just want some mileage numbers, ask away and I'll tell you what the map says

Some of the following information may be for the more computer literate and/or those with some understanding of the Spanish language as most of what is on these web pages is in Spanish.
The following links all come from the Mexican Gobierno (government) website of the Secretaria De Comunicaciones Y Transportes (Secretary of Communications and Transportation) or SCT. They publish maps and other information regarding the roads of Mexico. Others have mentioned this site. http://www.sct.gob.mx
You can purchase most/all of these maps if you are interested. Details of how to purchase is all in Spanish so may not be understood by all.
Some of these maps can be downloaded as .pdf files. Most of the maps at full size are about 3 feet by 4 feet – like a standard road map that is folded/unfolded.
There are statements on the website that it is against the law to copy or print these maps. The maps are locked so you cannot print them directly. You can download them and use them in your computer.
You can zoom in and out and move all around the maps if you are experienced with using .pdf files.
There is a trick for those who want to make the effort or take the time to print copies of parts of these maps. Helpful in a 3 ring binder type notebook. It will take some fooling around to get it just the way you want. Zoom to a readable size. Take a Screen Shot if your computer has the key near the upper right of the keyboard and you know how to do this – Ctrl – Prnt Scrn – Open Paint – Click Paste. Save as jpeg to Pictures. Make a new folder to save in. Edit to crop out all but the map. (That is just a rough idea hint of how to do it – either you know how or you don’t – I can’t explain better than that). Now you have a photo of the map section you want. Print the photo. I think this is illegal according to what I can read on the SCT website. You can purchase these maps there. Let you conscience be your guide. If nothing else you can download the files you might need and use your computer to look at them to do some planning.
http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/fileadmin/Atlas/turis2008.pdf Map of all Mexico with milage chart in kilometers and miles as well as distance above sea level in meters and feet. Buy at > http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=511
http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=513 Buy large atlas of Mexico – two versions – two prices – one has spiral binding – details at link.
http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=512 Mini atlas of Mexico – details at link.
http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=440 scroll down this page for individual maps of Mexico states in .pdf format – you can download these files – maps are about 3 feet by 4 feet if purchased or printed in full size. These are the best maps of Mexico we have been able to find. All 31 states.
http://aplicaciones4.sct.gob.mx/sibuac_i........ternet/ControllerUI?action=cmdEscogeRuta This is an interactive calculator to determine miles as well as toll costs for various routes in Mexico. It was mentioned in a reply above. At this webpage you can scroll to a state and then a city – pick start and finish location to find mileage from point to point – it will show an approximate route – you can also get an idea of where the tolls are and how much you might have to pay at each one – see autobus for motorhomes – if you have a toad you will have to add both autobuses and automoviles
http://dgp.sct.gob.mx/index.php?id=442 This will take you to a webpage with some route maps of various routes you might take in Mexico. Most are to/from Mexico City. They download a .pdf files and can be printed. They show point to point distances along the route with approximate travel times, distances, and location of tolls. May or may not be useful.

Use the SCT (Secretaria de Communicación y Transporte) website. It is in Spanish but easy to follow and gives you routes, distance, hours, toll roads and toll road costs for any type of vehicle. It hasn't failed me yet. Once in the website click on the middle right where it says Traza Tu Ruta

Another testimonial for The Mexican Highways RUTAS site.
It is an exercise in virtual traveling, and Mexican cartography, as you learn the names of the states and cities.
This gives you all kinds of detail, road #'s, distances, driving times, and location and cost of tolls. (But not road conditions).
If you have time, have your Mexico "Roji" map book on one side, and your laptop on the other, you can plot routes anywhere in Mexico, from any point to point, short or long, with up to two waypoints in between. That way, you can compare different routes - distances, times, costs. Then I print them out for further reference.
Note also that there is the selection of which vehicle you are driving - which gives you the toll rates you can expect. For our truck and 5th, the rate is that for "automovil remolque 2 eje". We also add at least 10% to the driving times estimates.
