We stayed in Okracoke last May. We liked it because it's out of the way. Fishing from the beach, good paddling, and enough variety in town (about 3 miles) for a nice lunch or dinner. No hook-ups.

If you want hookups, Camp Hatteras, the KOA and Ocean Waves are all within about 1/4 mile of each other. Just a short walk over the dune to the beach for any of them. Ocean Waves is smaller and has less amenities than the others. Camping fee is about 1/2 too. Here's a site picture at Ocean Waves:

There are four campgrounds at the National Seashore. No hookups at any of them. Our favorite is Ocracoke. Here's a site picture for Ocracoke:

September is the best time to go to the Outer Banks because the water is warm then for swimming, the fishing is gret, and there are no crowds.

I too recommend Ocean Waves Campground they have full hook-up's including CaTV, free WiFi, and cost half what the others in the area charge. You should have no problems getting reservations for September...

You will have no problem finding a place to stay in September. Come on up and look around and then make your choice. Great time to visit here.

We enjoyed Frisco Woods last October. They have spots on Pamilco Sound that offer some spectacular sunsets. Beach access is less than a 1/2 mile south at Billy Mitchel Rd.

Have been going to the OBX for years..............Ocean waves gets my vote!
If you like shade, be sure and ask for a site in the trees. The sites closer to the beach are treeless, but still nice sites.
If you like fishing, there is a bait and tackle store just south of the campground, and they can give you directions to the best beach access using your truck. (If you have 4wd, you can drive on the beach in most areas here)
I am sure you will have a great time!!!!!

Do you need hookups? If not, I'd go with one of the NPS campgrounds with Frisco being our favorite, Ocracoke second, Oregon Inlet then Cape Point. These all have clean restrooms with flush johns but cold water only showers. If hookups are a requirement, 1) Ocean Waves 2) Frisco Woods 3) Camp Hatteras and 4) KOA.
What do you like to do? Will you be bringing the jeep along? Would you feel comfortable taking the dually on the beach?
If you really want to get away from it all and enjoy the best beach on the eastern seaboard you might be interested in a couple of nights on Portsmouth Island. Take the Dodge over on the private ferry from Atlantic and camp just about anywhere you want between the dune line and the water.
