Yeah ol'yeller add the powersteering fluid change and I think you got it! Unless your considering a new bigger trailer a 4.11:1 should be alot nicer on the wiz-way but a 4.30 fits my diesel just right if I stay below 62 MPH.( no big turbo input keeps MPG up.

Hi

If you have a worn pitman arm , check the steering box, I had three bad Ford Boxes one original and three Ford re-mans, I went with a AGR steering Super Box and Pump, what a difference. Replace the steering stabilizer and re-align the front end, I would also reconsider the Rancho's they are junk in less than two years, been there and done that, go with a set of Bilstiens from E-bay best deal around.

I hate to pick on you, but I'm going to.

Why would one offer technical advice on a subject that one doesn't know anything about? The 4R100 in the original poster's transmission has only one band, and it isn't adjustable. Also, the only way to look at it is to take the trans out of the truck and disassemble it. That doesn't seem practicle. If you meant clutches, the only way to look at those is also to tear down the trans.

In another forum that I read they have a rule about BS tech. When someone posts info that they just make up they get banned.

I'm a firm believer in preventative maintenance. I change my oil and filter every 3K miles. I replace my tires before the wear stripes show up. When something breaks, I fix it. I have the tranny in my TV serviced every 30K and flush the ABS brake fluid every 2 years. I have my cooling system flushed every 50K. I find that doing this generally keeps me from sitting along the road waiting for a tow truck. The other stuff is all preventative maintenance except for the gear change. I plan to keep this truck for many more years and at least another 100K. A relatively small investment now should pay big dividends in the future. I have no truck payments and that is a good thing. The upcoming trip is really just an excuse to do what really needed to be done. The shop recommended a break-in of at least 500 miles (preferably 1,000) on the rear end gear set prior to towing. That is another reason why I am doing this now, so I can get some miles on it prior to the big trip.

As for the parking brake, mine has small shoes that fit inside the rear rotor and work like the old drum brakes.

As for the tranny, auto slushboxes are a mystery to me. I wouldn't even pretend to try to describe what they are doing in total. The shop is afilliated with a highly respected local tranny shop and I trust they know how to drain the trans and replace the filter.

I discovered the shocks are not Rancho but they are adjustable. I can't remember the brand as I am well past 50 and I had to remember how to get home tonight. The truck is in the shop and gear change is complete. Tomorrow they will begin the exhaust studs and the tune-up stuff. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

After 2 weeks in the shop, I got my truck back tonight. It is like a new truck. The exhaust manifold bolts were a major problem but after stopping in and seeing what they had to go through to drill them out, I'm very glad I didn't try to do this myself. With the new KYB adjustable shocks it feels much more solid on the road and I love how the change to 430 gears and posi woke up the V10. I have to break it in for 500-1,000 miles before I can tow with it but I am really looking forward to it! Thanks everyone for your input.
