While fueling at Wal-Mart, I have observed people twice fueling up, then leaving the station like a bat out of ****. One even left his gas cap and gas door open.
Both times the clerk came out after them, but they were too far gone.
Wal Mart is the only station around that you do not have to prepay for your gas.
I see that coming to an end soon.
Morality aside, I can almost see where it would be worth the possible punishment to steal fuel and avoid paying the $100+ to fill up your tank.

get use to fuel thiefs, it will become more and more the routine than the acception.
with the rise of prices on fuel the crime rate will go up, food prices will go up, the standard of living for most middle class individuals will lower.
Prices for gas here in florida are topping right now around 3.60 for gas and over 4.00 for diesel.
I am not that worried about fuel, they will make sure we have a good supply, unlike the 70's. As long as there is a supply the people will accept what they are forced to pay...It is food that worries me. There are some talking about food shortages in this country. that along with higher prices for food will create more of a problem than the price of fuel.
this will get a lot worse before it gets better, if it ever does.
I have found one thing that helps. I finally stopped looking at the DRUGEREPORT. I used to look at it everyday. Had to stop. It was making me a worry-wort.

Gas station drive-offs have doubled in my area. Station operators are talking about locking the pumps. So you have to go inside and pay for the gas first.

Back in the 70's (73 I think) a friend of mine got caught stealing gas and was given a choice of jail or the Marines. He chose the Marines. That changed him from a petty thief into a man. I don't think this is done much anymore, perhaps it should.

On another forum a poster reported that his tank was siphoned while at the dealership to be repaired! Twice! Canyon R/V in Colton Ca.
The fuel doors have locks that are common to many R/Vs and other uses. The power cord door and the fuel doors on out Imperial have the same key. Perhaps using a different lock might help, except for the damage done to get in. The filler cap is a screw on type with no venting etc so I guess using a pipe wrench to tighten it down is another alternative. Don't think the thieves will be carrying a pipe wrench do you?

One of my mechanics got tired of having his gas can taken out of his service truck so he filled it with water and added a quart or so of gas to it..........

Our area has been cash prepay for quite a while now. It doesn't bother me since I use the debit card at the pump but it would be pretty annoying if I was using cash.

Stealing gas seems like a poor return on a thief's money.
First, you have to drive around picking up your buddies, then drive around looking for a likely victim then steal the gas, and then celebrate and then drop off your buddies, then store the loot and drive home.
All the while, using gas.
That eats into the profits.

zsr22 wrote: I was wondering about this the other day. My RV is always parked with at least half a tank of gas. So we're talking a good 50 gallons. With a pump, a hose, and a little bit of time, I can't imagine it would be that hard to suck me dry.
That is why I bought a locking gas cap. Of course the old saying applies "Locks only keep the honest honest". They are no deterent for a real thief.
I live in the boonies, my MH is parked in the front and the filler cap faces the road which is about 100 feet away and about 30 feet from the house. I stay up late due to years of second shift, and the wife is usually up at 4:00 or 5:00.
