So, Vulcaneer asked me a question, which got me thinkinig even harder.... Is anybody towing with the 5.4L in a superduty crewcab? What are your impressions? I have a 28 foot 6000# Jayco 26L TT that we tow 8-12X a year on an average trip of 600 miles round trip maximum. What do you think?

I would imagine it would be a little slow on the hills, other than that I can't concieve of any big problems. Towing package????

Fla-gypsy is the man you need to talk to. He has one of those I believe, and is about to trade for a v10 if I am not mistaken. Do a search for his posts. Hope this helps!

Depends which year you're asking about. The older 2 valve 5.4s can be pretty painful to drive in a Superduty, particularly when you're talking about a heavier Crew Cab. The newer 3 valves are better and would probably survive if you don't mind revving the engine to get the power out of it.

I think you should be fine. Maybe slow on the bigger hills but consider that part of relaxing and enjoying the journey

I posted the identical question on the FTE website yesterday.
My take on it is...
With the 5.4, you should be fine.
With the V-10, you KNOW you'll be fine.
So it depends on whether or not you're willing to pay a little extra at the pump for the over-kill.
V-10's are like hen's teeth, at least around here. If you're looking to buy off the lot, you'll have more choices, and subsequently, more bargaining power, with the 5.4.
If you're going to custom order, that's moot.

Good luck,
jb

For a 6,000lb trailer the 3 valve 5.4L should be the best of both worlds for his application. Good and stable platform for what he is towing and give good mileage when he isn't. The V10 is much more thirsty even empty. I'd want to be sure I was towing something that required it before I dropped the extra coin on it. Especially with gas prices seeming to rise every day. Yes the 5.4L will rev a bit, but that is the way it was designed.

I believe the V10 upgrade is only a $500.00 option. I went from a 2000 F150 4X4 with the 5.4 to a 2002 F250 V10 4X4 and the milage was the same. I would get the V10, then you won't have any concerns and you won't have that thought in the back of your head of "should I have gotten the bigger one???????"
