Anyone had to drill a hole in the firewall to install the breakaway switch?

I find that a 'stepped' drill works wonders when it comes time to drill a hole for wires, switches, or the like.
Just make sure that both sides of the area you are planning on drilling is free of any obstructions.
The nice thing about the 'stepped' drill bit is that is starts off drilling a small pilot hole, and then enlarges the hole in set diameters.

I drilled up or down through the "rocker panel" beneath the drivers side door. I removed the finishing panel, and brought the wire up under it and it stays coiled up under the drivers seat. when not in use. No hole in the firewall.

Generally speaking, there is already a hole in the firewall, which is how the wires are routed from the engine compartment to the interior.
Look for the run and make a hole in the plastic "Grommet" to route the wires you want to run.
Do not simply route wires through a rough hole through metal. The wires will chafe and you may have some serious problems.

If you must remove the battery to access the hole, I suggest you attach a small battery charger to the terminals, which will keep power to the electronics, avoiding reprogramming. You can also use a lighter plug in an unswitched power port. Be careful with this because reverse polarity can damage something.

Agree with mmpe, there should be a rubber or plastic gromment that the steering or wires run through can easily be accessed. That's the way mine was done.

Even the car dealer did not want to drill into the firewall on our G-6.
Looks like all the wireing is out of the way behind the dash not under it with gromets.

right now I just run wires for BB and lights through the door and engine hood when towing.
