Shortest and most direct is: I-10 to I-8 just before Phoenix and I-8 into San Diego. Doesn't get any more direct than that. I-10 is rough in spots, but slow down and you should be fine.
The only bad part of I-10 is in Louisiana and I haven't driven it since it fell down during Katrina. I hope the fic=x was better than what they had. It's really rough.
I-10 to Slidell, La, I-12 to Baton Rouge, I-10 to Lafayette, La, I=49 to Shreveport, La, I-20 to West Texas, I=10 to I=8 just west of Tucson, I-8 to diego.
Past Ft Worth, Hammer down, and there are plenty of places to drydock along the way.
You didnt ask, but, we make the trip from Jax to Diego in 4 days.
I'm wondering why you go North to I-20 at Lafayette instead of staying on I-10? It is about 90 miles longer. We make a round trip from San Jose to Tampa once a year. What are we missing??
