We have been using our coach since first weekend in Feb. and usually there are about a dozen or so coaches in the snowmobile parking lot but there were several weekends that we were all alone. I was talking to the wife about it to see her take on it about fuel or not and then Easter weekend we were driving south to Zion's NP and only saw about 15 RVs the whole day in about 350 miles. We were wondering what the campground was going to be like and when we pulled in I couldn't beleive how many RVs were there. I was sure glad we made reservations. There were only two sites vacant one night and completely full the next two nights. We drove through Watchman CG and a few others and they were full as well. Then driving home we didn't see as many on the road as I thought we would.

We have several trips to the dunes and Moab planned this year and friends keep backing out on us. On our two dune trips it went from 6 rigs down to two and on our two Moab trips the first one went from 9 rigs down to one(us) and the second Moab trip went from 4 rigs down to one(us), yet amazingly the campground are filling up as I have been cancelling some of the sites. They all replied about the price of fuel. I tried to reason with one of our friends about not cancelling and asked him about if the price for fuel was the same as last year would he still go and he said 'YES'. For arguments sake I said ok, last year we used about 64 gallons of fuel @ $3.39/gal. equalling $217.00. If fuel was at $4.25/gal. this year (it isn't that much here yet) then fuel would cost $272.00 for this year's trip. We generally go into town for a nice dinner one night while we are there, let's cut that out and grille at the campground instead and that will more than make up the $55.00 difference in fuel. He still stood his ground and said 'no' he probably isn't going to go anywhere this year.
I don't understand, I know the price of fuel is rediculously high but I am not going to let it keep me from enjoying the outdoors and the RV lifestyle. Fuel price is something we have no control over, however, there are things that we do have control over in our lives that some people are unwilling to alter and instead just complain about. There is so much going on around us everyday that is positive that I don't understand why everyone has to focus so much on the negative. Sorry about my rant, Mike.

I certainly agree with you Mike. I may slow down a bit, but I doubt if my plans will change. I am in the evil energy business and we/I have seen this coming for a long long time. It was only a matter of time before the supply demand curves got tight (can you say China and India?) Most of us on this forum and others are so fortunate to be able to enjoy the RV life style. I will forego other things if need be to travel our beautiful country. I prefer to be concerned over things I have some control over. (virtually nothing except my attitude!) Travel safely.

Have to disagree with you.
Over the last 3 wks. drove on Friday here in South Louisiana, plenty of RVs on US90. Following Sunday from New Iberia, La to Searcy, Ar., plenty of RVs and at the Flying J @ Texarkana MHs were lined up 3 deep in the RV lanes and several others in the truck lanes. Next Sunday on the way back, same story on the road and at the same Flying J. Past Sunday from Rayne, La to home even though we left fairly early still lots of RVs on I-10 to Baton Rouge. Never many from BR to NO even when fuel was $1.00.

On our 200 mile trip yesterday from Wyandotte, Michigan to Elkhart, Indiana, we saw exactly two other motor homes on the interstate and that majority of the trucks were cruising at 60 MPH or less. We took I-94 east to 131 south, to the Indiana Turnpike west and only two motor homes along that route. Bagman.

Dynasty 40,
Thanks for the hints. I expect we'll take I-80 East out of SF. That will allow us to stop in SLC to spend some time with my son and family.

When do you plan to be in Castanoa?

Last night, we cancelled the second of two RV trips we had originally scheduled for this year. We discovered that we can drive the toad, stay for a week in a nice motel with cooking facilities in the room and other amenities for the grandkids, and visit the places we want to visit for $500.00 less than it would have cost to do the same trip in our coach. The major difference is made up by the fact that gasoline hit $1.20/litre ($4.65/US gallon) here in Ontario yesterday. Our toad is about 3.5 times more fuel efficient than the coach and over a 1500 mile trip, that is a huge difference. In addition, in the area we are visiting, the difference between campground fees and off-season motel rates (we are traveling in early June) is not significant.

I know the cavalier attitude among many is, "damn the fuel prices, full speed ahead". Unfortunately, I have neither the income nor the resources necessary to support that attitude.

Traffic, including RVs, on Interstate 40 between Little Rock,
Ar. and Nashville, Tn. seems heavier than usual, almost bumper to bumper a few days ago. I had commented to my wife that when and if gas and diesel reaches $5. per gallon we won't be able to set a car down on end on the interstate. We tried to keep our speed in the car at around 70 MPH and it seemed that everyone passed us. I really don't know what price it will take to get folks to stop unnecessary driving. It makes me wonder if anyone works in offices and factories any more, they're all on the road making the oil company people rich.
Of course, the oil company executives really need several million a year to live comfortably!!!!!!!!
