If you want to entertain the children, take them to Herkimer , NY, to hunt for Herkimer Diamonds. They will find many, and the campground is right next to the hunting area. Everyone we recommend this to loves the adventure.

When in Sept do you plan to visit, and do you want full-hookup or dry sites? Too many options until I know the details! ST

If you go up through New York on the Thruway, be sure to stop at Mohonk Mountain House for a day. It's in that book 1000 places to see before you die. Usually you have to hike up from the gatehouse about 2 miles if you aren't staying as an overnight guest at the hotel. HOWEVER... book a lunch at the granary and you get to drive up to the hotel. The gardens are magnificent as is the hotel. The granary lunch is on a cliff top out in the woods. If it's still warm you can swim in the lake.

Minnewaska State Park is gorgeous too. I can't remember the campgrounds but there are some in the vicinity. We're going there in June so if you want to see photos just make a note to check our website.

Hi

Living up here in New England and camping throughout the area since 1963, I can say that I have enjoyed the autumn more than any other time of the year especially when I'm camping.

The best time to see the colors is typically the first two weeks in October, but that isn't a guarantee. Sometimes is starts as early as Mid September or as late as Mid October, so try and schedule your trip in late September or early October. The farther north you travel in new England will typically yield the fall colors the during earliest dates and it will bloom the latest in southern New England.

I would recommend the following hot spots for enjoying the fall here in New England

Rte 100 in Vermont
Stowe Vermont,
Queechiee Gorge, VT.
Kangamancus Highway, Lincoln - Conway, NH
Mount Washington
The Flume at ( Terry) Franconia Notch
Lake Winnepausakee- Squam Lake ( On Golden Pond)
Bar Harbor , Maine
Camden, Maine
Freeport , Maine
Fenway Paahk ( A Must See! take the tour)
Plimith Plantation
Newport, RI
Old Mystic Seaport, CT

There are plenty of Campgrounds up here in the Northeast, but they fill up fast during the fall foliage season so you need to book ASAP

PM me and I can offer you some Campground suggestions.

Base campground for most of the New England States I would recommend Minuteman Campground in Littleton, Mass.IMO it is outstanding and the staff and owners are first class. I will let there reviews speak for themselves.Their web site will update you on their facilities that you will find hard to beat. You will not be disappointed. The Duck Boat rides in Boston is a must trip and Fanueil Hall area has several seafood restaurants that you will really enjoy. Have a great trip.

Nascar 24 has a great list of must-see's. My two cents: September probably won't have much foliage change yet, although it starts up in VT first and works it's way down to NH/MA by Columbus Day. Book EARLY. If your heading to Waterbury VT for Ben and Jerry's you might want to continue a few miles further down Route 100 into Stowe, it is THE most quaint little New England town with one of the most photographed "little white churches" around. You can stop in at the Cold Hollow Cider Mill just before you get into Stowe. There are also signs directing you up to the Von Trapp Family Lodge as well (Sound of Music...) Nice place to spend a few hours or a day exploring. Also from around the Barre area (just south on Rt 89 from Waterbury), I believe you can pick up Route 302 for a nice drive that will take you over into NH and eventually into the Mount Washington/North Conway/Kancamagus Highway area, which is definitely a must-see.
Have fun!!!

While in NH go visit the Mount Washington Hotel...even if you just have lunch in the restaurant. You might even encounter a ghost or two. Mount Washington Hotel

old mystic, ct
subbase Groton, ct
booth bay be sure to take drive out east of down town. also they have web cams take a peek.
Plymouth rock
cape cod
Acadia park plan on staying in the area.
There is a bridge going to Acadia from booth bay that the inside of it is a must don't think of the name but you will know it when you get there.
Last year we had lobster at the roadside stands passed up the tourist places, much cheaper.
stop in Ohio on your way and I'll stow away I love the east coast I was stationed at the sub base in Groton, new London.

If you are sticking strictly to New England, Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor (leef peeping), Plimouth Plantation, Sturbridge Village, Lexington & Concord, Minuteman National Park, Freedom Trail in Boston, Boot Mill complex in Lowell, MA,and Portsmouth, NH. If you want to add NY and PA I'd go to Ft. Ticonderoga in NY and Gettysburg in PA. Remember you have to account for travel time and up in this area we measure distance by time, not miles.
