Next week we will be headed to Goshen, IN from Baltimore, MD. We will be driving a 36 ft diesel pusher towing a Honda Accord. We are thinking about avoiding the PA and OH turnpikes by taking I70 to Columbus and then Route 33 to Goshen. Is this a good plan? We are not sure about Route 33. Thanks for any information.

You are absolutely right to avoid the Turmpike. I used to make a yearly trip from Indiana to Philadelphia. I took the Turnpike the first time, and never again.
I recommend I-70 to I-68, otherwise you're not avoiding all of the Turnpike. At Morgantown, WV take I-79 north to I-70.
I've never been on 33 but looking at my map I'd recommend you go a bit further north and take 30 from arond Lima, OH to Fort Wayne, IN. 30 is a divided highway, 33 is not. After Fort Wayne get on 33 to Goshen.

Having driven 70, 68 & 33 in the past 18 months, I'd recommend the turnpike. the WV/PA border to the turnpike is terrible IMHO, very narrow and no acceleration nor deacceleration lanes at the exits. 33 isn't the greatest from Columbus to Lima, OH and 33 from Ft Wayne to Goshen is worse. Pay the tolls and take the turnpike, I think you'll be happier and arrive much sooner. Enjoy Goshen and seeing hose drawn buggys coming out of Wal-Mart @ midnight, they even have a place in the Wal-Mart lot to feed & water the horses for the Amish.

Cwenger,

First welcome to the forum neighbor, sorry to say I’ve driven this more times than I’d like to admit.

So I’ll pass along what I’ve learned. 100 to I-70 to I-68 to I-79 to I-70 thru Columbus to Rt 33 we would usually take this to I-469 around fort Wayne to Rt 30 to Rt 15 into Goshen or in our case on to Wakarusa. Around 650 miles and we would usually take a day and a half to make the trip in the RV or a 10 hour day in the car to pick up a week or so later in the car we would take the expressways / toll roads as the speed and drivability were better.

On average war usually about a 12 hour trip in the RV so it would be doable in two easy days.

That’s the way we would do it and it was often – hope this is of some help,

Thanks to all who answered my post. As of now, we plan to try the route that Busskipper uses. If we don't like it, we'll try a different route on the return trip.

Rt. 30 in Ohio and Indiana is a great road. 33 from Columbus to Wapakoneta is not a disaster. 469 and 69 around Ft. Wayne is a great road.

I do not agree with the comments from INBELLYBOY. I have driven rv's since 1969 and currently do dealer trades throughout this area.

Happy Trails!
