I gues "ignorance is bliss" in 2005 I spent several days in Centennial Park on 2 occasions. There were some, what appeared to be undesireables there, but no problems that I knew of. In our travels we have come across some permanents in CG's that looked no different than those in Centennial. I guess I was lucky or things have gotten worse. Excluding some of the clientel, The park itself is not bad.

Well Don, things have gotten worse since your stay in '05. From what I hear there is a gang ("gang" - these are nothing but hoodlums who wouldn't know a gang if they tripped over them! I lived in East L.A. and those are gangs!) that has "taken over" the area causing a lot of problems and vandalism.
In addition, you have your ordinary drunks and homeless people (not that I am grouping them together - I understand there are circumstances in people's lives...)

Anyway, to make it short, it isn't the same place as you visited Don.

According to my Alaska Camping book there is also the Anchorage RV Park, the Creekwood RV Park, and Electronic Solutions Midtown Camper Park. Have all of those closed??? If so, the best use for this book may be as a paper weight.

Sounds like you have an older edition of the Alaskan Camping book. Here are some updates to the 2003 edition. http://www.rollinghomes.com/aadds3.htm You will note that the Anchorage RV Park is listed as being closed. The other two you mentioned, one was mentioned earlier in this thread, Creekside, and it and Midtown are still open as far as I know, just so far in this thread not any recommendations from forum members to stay at either. Some folks obviously like them enough to stay or they wouldn't be able to stay in business.
The Alaskan Camping book by Mike and Terri Church has been recently updated and is available from book sellers. It is the 4th edition. I got my copy from Amazon.com.

There is a CG in Eagle River. I've not been there so I can't comment. The first detraction is the sign leading to it says "LANDFILL CAMPGROUND". Don't worry about that as they are on opposite sides of the highway. If its decent, that would make it reasonably close to Anchorage.

Bird Creek is very nice (I hope they DON'T put in utilites) about 30 miles south of town.

Its a shame that Centennial has declined--I stayed there when I first moved to Anchorage in '94 and I didn't worry about theft or anything.

Eagle Rive CG is very nice and is far from the landfill. It is near a prison but I would not wory about it. There ia one gentleman that lives in that area year rouind but he is a recluse and not a bother.

I think the only CG missing is Eklutna. Not really well marked but a very nice spot. The road was paved a couple of years ago and they made it a bit narrow and the grade is a bit high. It does make for some interesting moments when there is on coming traffic. The CG has paved spots and the lake area is very scenic. The drive to Anchrage is about the same as Palmer with the cost of a tat CG.

Also there ia a Fred Meyers in Eagle River where I have seen many over nighters. Eagle river itself is about a 15 minute drive to downtown.

I forgot about Eklutna. I've not camped there but it the park is very nice. Great easy mountain bike riding. Kayaking/canoeing too.

I'd say they did a lousy job with the paving--I think it was safer as a dirt road.

Stay away from Golden Nugget! It is run down and the facilities are not in good condition. We stayed there in 2006 and pulled out one night sooner.

LOL - I've been meaning to take a picture of that sign for years. It makes me laugh every time I pass it.

As for Bird Creek utilities. I don't want them changing that campground either. Call Superintendant Tom Harrison, Chugach State Park at Potter House (907) 345-5014 or (907) 244-0299 and tell him you don't want utilities there - it's still Alaska and budget money comes and goes - if they haven't started yet, they could change their mind. He loves to hear from resident park users. But last I heard they thought everyone wanted utilities and they could make a profit - or a contractor could.

In late June 2007 we stayed at Ship Creek that was tight but we could walk downtown. The guy next to us was a pick-up camper on saw horses--never saw the truck.
Later in August 2007, we stayed at Golden Nugget--nice park--good location and easy to get into and out of. I would stay there again. I guess most of the caravan had left because there was lots of space and the management was as good as most other management groups.
