Just this minute got back from Ouray, we are in Durango for the summer. I met 1 class A going north on our way back south and 1 class C on our way north. Also 1 5th wheel going north on our way south. Lynda and I agree....we don't know of anything that would cause us to drive that road in the motorhome. Could I do it? Yes, but WHY!!!!!

maddog,

We were in the toad, not the RV. We went in 2004 and I don't remember how long it took.
We were doing what has been suggested here - pre-driving the route before taking the RV. Decided NOT to do it. When we went, it was raining. I should have pulled over and waited but didn't. The combination of rain, big drop offs, other drivers with more confidence tailgating or trying to pass, and the switchbacks made for a stressful drive. It is doable, lots of RV's get through the pass just fine. It's just not my thing. Other's mileage may vary.
(I was kidding about too scared to buy the tee shirt.)

In Mid-May will be staying a few nights Durango KOA. Want to do a day-trip up 550 to Black Canyon of the Gunnison to take some photos(weather permitting). Will be taking Durango/SilvertonRR day before - only have 1 'extra' day. Want to know a little more about the road - read some posts that make it seem worse than MokiDugway up Utah261, MexicanHat to NaturalBridges. Will be driving 2WD RAV4. Any info plus/minus would be appreciated. THANKS.

I see you got plenty of advice about the road, just a side note though. Plan on a LONG day if you are going from Durango up to Black Canyon of the Gunnison just for a day trip. Hope you get an early start out of Durango. You can spend a full day at Black Canyon if you take your time to enjoy the sites and read the information and go for the hike at the end of the road. It is a beautiful place, do not rush through it!
