Yes it's all about genetics isn't it. Many English bred are what the "show judges" want, that large square block head, deep chested, large boned.
If you go to any breeder (reputable)you can see what they breed, what their end product is and most likely look at many, many photos of their offspring.
The breeder we went too bred for agility, so their females are field bred, the papa's were English, each for certain characteristics, they've been doin this for twelve years and are extremely proud of their offspring.
I have a friend that had two English bred boys, one was 110 lbs. and the other was ninety, our last field bred was 75 lbs.
Don't know what Lucy will end up at but we're so pleased with her attitude and personality.
I feel a Lab would be a wonderful choice for you as well. Please go to petfinder.com's sidebar and type in your zip and you will find a multitude of rescues. I rescued a white lab from our local animal shelter (he was about a year old). I called my daughter and son-in-law and asked if they would take him. They already have a golden retriever as we are a Golden Retriever family but Tommy was just so precious I couldn't leave him at the pound. The kids said yes and have not regretted it. Tommy the lab is such a clown and the love of their lives. He is an English looking lab. He has the big block head and stocky body. Oh by the way, the kids live in a 2 bedroom apt with these 2 big dogs.
Good Luck~~~~~~~~~

Our neighbors drove all the way from Mitchell, SD to Oxford, Mississippi to pick up their British Lab puppy. Hutch is a beautiful dog, well trained, and a wonderful companion and hunter. They got him from Wildrose Kennels in Oxford. They kept Hutch at home until he was about six months and took him back for training at Wildrose.
