Heading to Wmsburg and DC area later this month for the third time (to each his own I guess)and although we've been to Asheville years ago, decided to add another day to our trip to see Biltmore again. Didn't really intend to, but all your posts convinced us. Looks like the overwhelming majority recommend it: thanks!
You will probably spend the 45 anyway and not have near the experience you will find at Biltmore. With the beautiful gardens, winery and house it is not as expensive as it sounds.
We did it a Christmas a few years ago. We feel it was worth it....

Enjoy Colonial Williamsburg - My favorite place to visit. We've been there 3 times, once in the fall & twice in the spring. The gardens are beautiful & you'll feel like you've stepped back in time. It is very charming and educational. Be sure to eat at one of the taverns for dinner where musicians serenade you and you can try period food. We also enjoyed a horse & carriage ride and sipping hot cider in the fall. We hope to visit there at Christmas time in the future.
We haven't made it to Biltmore yet, but plan to go eventually. Our next adventure is to the beach.
