I am the original "poster". Here is what I did, emailed MAXLIFE to ask if their product was compatable with MERCON SP. After I did this, I marched down to the service center and told them that they used the wrong type ATF, and it needs to be replaced with what is needed (MERCON SP). They insisted that MAXLIFE is as good as what the manuel "recommends". They will not give me a refund or reflush/fill.

I just got the reply back from Valvoline MAXLIFE, and they insist that their product is compatable with MERCON SP and the warrantee will not be voided because of using MAXLIFE ATF.

So instead of keeping the one type fits all ATF in my Diesel, I decided to bite the bullet and pay for another transmission service, at the Ford Dealer Station - $307.00 With all the things that could go wrong (especially what you hear about the PSD 6.0) I do not want to take a chance.

Lesson learned. A 300 dollar lesson. Guess for now on I am going to insist (when replacing other things (oil, coolant etc) that they use ONLY what the manual recommends/states!

That really stinks and I'm sorry that happened to you. The first time I had my tranny serviced I did so at my local Ford dealer. When I returned to pick up my truck I strolled over to the bay to see how things were going. The mechanic told me he was almost done and was just topping it off. I noticed he was filling the tranny with Mercon V. I told him the manual said to use Mercon SP only. He tried to convince me Mercon V was fully compatible, right up to the moment I showed him the manual....specifically the section that states DO NOT USE Mercon V because it may damage the transmission. In the end, the dealership pulled the pan, drained the fluid, changed the internal filter, and refilled with the proper fluid. I had them note their mistake on my bill in case there were any complications from the mix up. They gave me the service for free. I wasn't too worried about the tranny because they had not started the motor yet....all the fluid was in the pan. I have over 96k miles now and everything still seems OK.

Good thing you caught it DRGREEN. It just goes to show ya that some people can not be trusted. You go in for service and pay good money, and you get shabby work. It is scary to think that the possibility is that there is a (eventhough small percent - I hope) chance that what the repairman does can actually damage your vehicle. It seems to be getting more common too. Recently, when I took my car in for an oil change, I left the place and the low oil light went on. They forgot to add the oil. Sheese. Makes me want to take a course on Auto Repair (especial for my deisel) so I can do the work myself.

Have you thought of calling FMC Customer Service?
The number should be in the back of your owners manual.

You could very well get your money back, especially if you have the work order marked with what the dealer put in.

Give it a try, you should be pleasantly surprised.

when I had my 6.0, I was on a trip checked my tranny and it was low.. Looked in my book for the type of fluid went to the local checker, couldnt find it the guy tryied selling me other stuff.. Instead I went to the local Ford dealer and paid ALOT more for their brand.. They said it was the only stuff for the torqshift.. Will others work, Probably wouldnt hurt a thing...I guess its just wether you want to take the chance... Out of everyting I have had they say to use thier Oil.. Harley always said nothing but Harley oil, My boat says to use mercruiser oil, Kawasaki said to use thiers and so on....... Who knows..
