I have an opportunity to purchase an used Pride Jet 7 Mobility Scooter at a very low price from my sister. My quesion is, will this model when disassembled fit into the trunk of a large car? She says that she thinks it will but when her DH was alive they always put it into the back of a truck. We have a van and we know it will go up the ramp and into the van but what about the trunk of a car? Has anyone done this? Thanks in advance for any help.

My mother-in-law has one. I can't say that it will go into a trunk. It basically stays in the house. I'm sure your sister has told you that the gell batteries do not last long at all. Most people guess about 500 yds before needing to be re-charged

Thanks for the reply's. I have looked the model up on line and even downloaded a user manual but nothing beats word of mouth. My BIL only used the scooter for a few months before he died so my sister is not an expert on the model.

I know that it is a great deal at $500 because the scooter was barely used. I also know that most of the time we will transport it in our van. However, this summer we are planning a trip to California via Amtrak and I want to take the scooter for sightseeing purposes. That is where the problem is... we are sharing a rental car with in-laws and the scooter would have to break down easily and fit in the truck other wise I will need to take a manual wheel chair and that will be make me very dependant on others.

We are going to go ahead and purchase the chair but will pick it up next Friday, in plenty of time to decide if I will be taking it or another chair.

I was just hoping someone on this forum had some first hand experience with breaking one of the Jet 7 models down for travel purposes.

The Jet 7 is a power chair, not a scooter. It will break down, but I an pretty sure the base unit is too big for a trunk, You would be better off renting a van for your trip.

Hi,
I'm not familiar with the model chair you posted about. You might post on Pride Mobility site your questions. One of Pride's folks can check into your needs with service tech: http://webtalk.pridemobility.com/forums/index.php

BTW: If you plan on taking it on a trip I'd recommend you getting a load test on batties, especially if chair has been stored and not used or charged in awhile. Be a hassel to get on trip and batteries fail or so gone only have short distance.
I know lat trip we had Mama's powerchair batteries were about shot. Lucky we have rapid charger and inverter in Sprinter so could do quick full charge in short period of time. My chair would be down 1 or 2 lights and Mama would be down to red.
Also, if chair chan't fit your trunk you might check with local durable medical equipment providers about renting a light-weight or even featherweight chair, be sure to check weight capacity. These little fellas surely will fit midsize car's trunk.
Also, if you will be at big attractions check ahead often you can rent scooter while in that area.
Good Luck,
MikeP

Vacationing where you are sight seeing in and out the car a regular wheelchair and a loved one works much better for us. The time and energy spent on assembling and transporting a power chair is something to be considered. Not that I would skip the purchase of a power chair at that price.

The Jet7 your looking at most likely uses a VSI controller/joystick. They're prone to thermal rollback/shutdown, and generally have a high failure rate in the industry. Kind of pricey replacement cost too. Also, decent deep cycle gel cell batteries are recommended for range and longer service life, but they cannot withstand quick charging. If you want quick charge ability, you'd be better off with AGM deep cycle batteries. The Jet series is being phased out, being replaced by the Select series in general.

The Pride model 1107 (discontinued) was specifically designed to be disassembled for transporting in a more confined space. If you could find a used one around for dirt cheap, it would provide you with what you're looking for. They were fitted with VSI as well as Remote Plus joystick/controller combinations. Finding the better Remote Plus version would be a needle in a haystack.

Good luck.

Pride offers a couple of "travel" type mobility scooters that are probably a better solution than a power chair. Take a look at the Pride Go Go Elite Traveler Plus at their website. This is one of a number of designs intended to quickly break down into pieces, none of which weigh more than 28 pounds and store easily in a compact car trunk, or RV cargo space. Assembly time is about two minutes. This model uses two 12 volt 17 amp hour gel batteries giving 10 mile plus range. Another lighter one is the EV Rider Caddy. I have a "No Boundaries"/Tzora Feather Light Classic and am trying to buy a new motor transaxle unit for it. No Boundaries is out of business but Planet Mobility is selling the same scotter as a "Lexis Light".

I have a Victory Pride Scooter for work/local/mall/distance use, and have a hydraulic lift in the bed of our 2500 Dodge Ram truck. This one goes about 25 miles on a charge and I charge it whenever I'm not on it. But we are purchasing a go-go scooter to carry with us on the MH because of ease in breaking down for storage either in the underbelly of the MH or trunk of the small tow car for use when sight seeing. We also have access to a power chair but find that transporting it is difficult.
