This will be my third year volunteering for Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and last year I gave my word I'd be there for the month of July 2008. So, although it will cost considerably more for gas than my previous trips, I'm going. Besides, I want to travel while I'm healthy and I really don't expect gas prices to go down much, if at all.

You bet I am cutting back. And as one poster said it will be at a slower pace when I do travel. If we all cut our speed by 10 mph below the limit how much oil consumption would we prevent? I'm not bright enough to figure out how much but it's a bunch!

I will be doing less this summer but it is not because of the fuel prices for the trip. It is what the higher fuel costs are doing to me week after week and month after month. The higher price of fuel for me to get to and from work is killing me. The our food costs are going up. So it look like the bite out of our monthly budget is getting bigger and bigger. That leaves less for the trips. We are trying to cut back on daily driving, but it just isn't enough to make a difference. So it was I could stash a certain anount of cash each check into the vacation account. Now I have to "dip into it" and pay the additional day to day.
Then you take the trip we are still planning on making, and it is costing more already. Looks like about $500 more for me. My diesel buddy is squaking big time. That is before we even leave the driveway. We're dropping boats and water craft, and that fuel is more than we had budgeted last year for this trip. No idea where food and associated costs will be by summer. MY guess is it's gonna get worse for a while.
So I'm thinking the second trip is in real jeopardy.

Nope, I would rather put gas in the tank and enjoy the WA and OR coasts than pay SoCal Edison to run the air conditioning at the house.

No way. You only live once. I have many places I want to see and I doubt if prices will come back down. I need to see these places while my health is still good.

I've been planning trips since the end of the last camping season and so have put away money each month just for gas. BUT, next year I'm going to be making other plans. There is no end in sight.

Looking to change our planned Michigan trip into something a bit closer (within 4-5 hours of home). We are still going to Asheville and Gatlinburg next week.

Wow there are a lot of fuel threads out there! I couldn't figure out which one I'd replied to anymore. Just one thing, for anyone hoping that cutting back on fuel is going to bring demand down and therefore price think again. For every gallon of fuel you don't use, China and India will use it for you.
As far as affordability is concerned that's a whole other issue. I still have the luxury of splitting the gas between two couples (parents and us) or else this would seriously be getting too pricy for us. That doesn't even account what someone else (sorry forgot the name) pointed out: The day to day price hikes.
We'll still be travelling and Colorado tour is still om my list of things to do.

Yes we canciled. We are planning 4 much shorter trips 200 miles or less round trip. I think the kids will still have fun we are just getting more creative. Oh buy the way gas was 27 cents per gallon a month ago in Venizuealla. 87 cents over in the sand box, and 98 cents in the rural parts of Mexico. We are getting &%#$ and not getting kissed.
