As fuel prices continue to increase in the US, what do you want to bet Mexico will be full of gringo RV'ers next winter - attracted by the less expensive Mexican fuel.
(??)
It might be a good idea to have those rv park reservations prior to crossing the boarder.

I guess if a 'gringo' can afford to drive to Mexico for the winter, he can probably afford to drive to Arizona or Texas.

Since many gringos have to drive from Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and further distances to Texas, New Mexico & Arizona to cross the border, they wouldn't save anything on fuel if they went into Mexico. Most would already be at their previous years destination before they got to the border. Possibly one tank full at the border and then head back. Just my take on the situation.

Of course if you wanted to tour Mexico and spend the winter there, the cheaper fuel prices would be great. I lived in Central America for 6 years and saw enough when I was there, so it holds no great interest for me to spend the winter there.

Instead of Mexicans smuggling drugs, we are going to see them running across the border with 5 gallon fuel tanks strapped to their backs.

We spent less than a quarter of our total fuel costs in Mexico this past winter, next winter it will be an even lower percentage.

Getting down there next year will be the expensive part!

When I read this, I had visions of one of the "Madd Max" movies and people racing for the border. If you haven't seen these movies, the movies are Mel Gibson's earlier works that depicts life in the future when the fuel runs out for vehicles. Bad movie, so so entertainment value.

You could be right but, my bet is that there will be less folks making the trek to Mexico due to the fuel costs. I think that those of us that go, will keep trying to make the effort. My rv sat for a month while in Mexico, didn't use any fuel. I guess those that tour will find Mexico easier on the fuel pocket book. I agree though, getting there could be challenging.

You mean that the gringos will be running "back" across the border with 5 gallon fuel cans strapped to their backs!

It appears people along the border are coming to Mexico now just to fill up.

If fuel prices stay at these levels (and beyond) less people will be using their RVs and there will be empty sites all over the SW and Mexico next winter (and beyond).

Factoid 1:

Mexico actually imported for the 1st time, from mid 2007, a major chunk of it's domestically-sold gasoline (an astounding 45% !), because of extremely taxed home refining capacity.

Factoid 2:

The Mexican government regulates every aspect of it's fuel manufacturing (the retail prices at the pumps, too, of course); this translates to cheaper Mexican fuel way south of the border, and far more expensive fuel just across in Mexican border side communities and pueblos.

IMO: I can see Mexican fuel increasing to well over $3.00 a gallon by end of 2008 because of North-to-South cross-border gas shoppers. If you want the cheaper Mexican fuel, you'll have to go several driving days south.

Good luck,

If I am not mistaken, there is joint ownership of a refinery in Texas between a U.S. company and Mexico. The idea is that if it is out of Mexico, Pemex cannot control it (regarding nationalization). I will get the details.

Three years ago, ex-President Fox, started a project to build a refinery in Costa Rica for the same reason.
