Wow, after reading all the replies here I have learned campers ARE NOT the nice friendly folks I thought them to be!
Looks like we will look into more boondocking and avoid the "friendly" campgrounds.
This thread certainly paints an antisocial picture of RVers.

Campground life is like anything else...you are always bound to find someone that you don't get along with. I, for one, am generally always up for conversations. What I DO NOT LIKE is someone that stops by to use my doorstep as a soap box. Two things we do not discuss with strangers are politics and religion.

You hit that one square on the head. Do not like either of those topics with anyone I don't know very very well.
We usually like to stick with "light" conversation. General common interest type stuff, especially fishing. LOL

Since we camp with a large dark faced german shepherd we don't worry too much about people ambling over to chat with us. We actually go camping to get away from others, relax, play some cards and eat good food. We both see too many people at our jobs during the week. Most people haven't seen a sable and red shepherd before and stay away.

Wear headphones and pretend like you can't hear anyone until at least the second time they try to get your attention...
I did that at a previous job. No one had to know that my radio didn't even have batteries.
Actually, I am much friendlier when I'm camping!

Well -I- was kidding and I'm sure many of the other replies here are kidding too. I have walked up to many campers on many different occassions and started up a conversation and always found it to be enjoyable. My conversations are only about 5 minutes long though.

I just stare at him for awhile then hand him a slip of paper informing him that I am deaf & mute but would like him to attend a skinhead deaf and mute church meeting that night.

We had a social, blabbermouth guy & girl we put up with for a couple nights in an adjacent site. They liked us so well they wanted our address/phone # before they left. Thought we should all go "camping together" again! In desperation, gave them a false phone number!

Though I try to be more tactful with people I will see more than once (at work I usually end up ignoring them and trying to do my work / get to where I'm going etc.), I don't see much problem being abrupt at the campsite.
Be nice (I have a friend with mild autism who doesn't pick up social cues), but as soon as a conversation ventures into annoying / nutty territory, then I no longer think its my "job" to continue to give of my time. Try your best.
P.S. I did LOL at Enjoying the Lagniappe's answer of "Why are you talking to me?" Yeah, gets the point across!

Wow this topic I started has alot of attention. I/we are allways ready to listen to the fellow camper who comes around. The problem is at the campground we allways go to. We know all the regulars. We made friends with alot of them. There are just some that a little goes a long way. Be nice to your camper friends but don't over stay your welcome.
