I am a pretty "green" person at home. Have my own grocery bags, water filter system, recycle, husband bikes to work, organics, natural cleaning products. You get the picture. Well, I have been planning out camping trips close to home due to gas prices. I have also been thinking about the way we camp. We have a 12 foot pop-up. We eat with disposable plates, bowls and silverware. We buy lots of bottled water. We do recycle when we camp. I am going to do things different from now on. If I am so "green" at home then I have to be "green" camping! I mean- we are going out into nature- we need to take better care of it! So, i am going to buy plates, bowls, ect. and wash them. I am going to fill up a few gallons of water and take many of out Sigg bottles with us. I am looking for more creative ideas. What's on your mind.................

The new stuff is nice to have, but instead of just recycle, why not pre-cycle.
Garage sales. New-to-you plates, cups and forks.
A cooler with a spigot - just keep refilling the bottles instead of opening the cooler or fridge.
Avoid pre-packaged single serve products.
More later...
Love to read more ideas too.

Thank you, thank you. I was beginning to think I was the only one! I get all sorts of weird comments from extended family and friends because I don't buy paper plates and cups and things at home or while camping unless I host a big party and don't have enough dishes. They just don't understand why I would be happy to wash a few dishes and I can't see why they are killing trees or worse yet using plastic plates and cups to throw out after one use. Anyway, to each his/her own, but it is nice to know I am not the only one thinking this way. I was beginning to wonder! We also buy biodegradable soap and cleaning products made from plants--not petroleum. Can't wait to see more ideas.

we refill our bottles with tap water. use regular plates and silverware. Buy fresh veggies at a local market.
AND...most proudly: Use my homemade firestarters(cardboard egg cartons, dryer lint, and old crayons/candles)!!! They worked great.
This may prove to be an interesting thread- thanks

We are having a birthday party for my DD this weekend. I usually stress out at what to buy and how much do I need. I am not going to buy plates, cups and silverware! I can use my own! I have tons of the stuff. I just take the extra time and wash is. I also save money!
I also love to rummage! Thanks for the idea! I will look for "new" plates, silverware and cups.

Install a whole house water filter (probably between the hydrant and your trailer in your case) so you can drink the water with no bad taste. Make sure you sanitize your system regularly (several times a year).

My parents started camping in a TT when I was about 8 years old (1963). I remember (vividly) wearing nothing but a pair of cut off shorts and we never took a shower as we swam in any water hole available. Clothing was no issue either I swam in those shorts and they just air dried as I played. Well, the campground we were at didn't' have ANY modern facilities and the only fresh water source was a single hand pump in the middle of the campground! We thought we were kings! When I look back, it was pretty primitive!
So, why not let the kids run around with just a pair of shorts and let them swim in the nearest water hole! It will save on laundry and baths!

We filter our drinking water with a Brita filter instead of buying it in bottles; never use disposable plates, etc.; save cans for recycling; wash and re-use aluminum foil when possible, and many other 'green' measures, at home or at camp. It's how I was brought up and it wouldn't occur to me to do otherwise. Two out of three of our RVs were 'pre-cycled', as well .

I love to recycle (rummage), one man's trash is another man's treasure and saves things from the landfill! Probally one of the best "green" things we can do! Anyway, as for tips, what about using solar power? I've seen portable panels that campers use to charge the batteries during the day. You could change out the regular light bulbs with LED bulbs, use less energy. Bamboo sheets/towels. Can't wait to see some other tips...

Living in an RV is already pretty green. I mean how much electricity do you NOT us when camping? How much less water do you use? We unfortunately live in a disposable society and many people have bought into that scenario by using paper plates, plastic silverware and disposable diapers. What happened to simply washing our dishes and washing dirty diapers? I do applaud you for making the change. Wish others would too. Remember, anything made of plastic comes from oil. I need all the oil available to fill by diesels tank.
