My motorhome is an old class C with a 79 Chevy frame and a Shasta body. It kills me in gas just to start it I think?. We have taken it on a few trips since we got it last November and for the most part, it runs great. My problem is it gets about 7 to 9 miles per gallon and I can't afford to do what I wanted to do.

Does anyone think I can still find good places to camp without driving for a few hundred miles?

Maybe someone has some tips about getting better gas milage out of my unit?. I will take any suggestions please. I feel like my entire summer is ruined.................

Mine only gets 6/7 mpg, but I still love it and make plans and don't camp too far from home, although will be going about 300 miles each way in June to a Rally.

I just did a quick Google search for "Lebanon PA Campground" and had two good hits: Thousand Trails is also in your area. I don't know your area at all, but expand a Google search to some of the other towns in your area, or check some campground directory web sites like: www.gocampingamerica.com

Good luck!

I had a Class B 1977 Santana that maybe got about 10 mpg with a 350 (5.7 liter) Chevy and four barrel carb. Had I kept it I was leaning toward the Holley 2bbl TBI that pretty much bolts on to replace that gas guzzling 800 CFM quadrajet carb. It should still be available from Summit or Jegs. My current B+ is probably a ton heavier and but with the 6.0 Vortec fuel injection I can get 12+ if I drive it easy.

Sounds like your doing really good on the mpgs considering the age of your MH. Ours get pretty much the same mpgs. We decided to invest in our own private site instead of investing in the oil company. We are traveling much less for now, but we intend on kicking it up later. You could even consider renting a site somewhere close by. Or buying into a campgroud membership like Thousand Trails, etc. If your interested in a campground membership you should search on ebay... don't pay full price. You could possibly get a membership for a few hundred $$$s.

Use that Gov't rebate check and buy 93 octane (more power) and it will give you better fuel figures, loved the old quadrajet spreadbores-keep a light foot and you will get pretty good performance out of them, the primaries are smaller than a holley 600cfm,take $50 and drain and refill all fluids, engine ,trans(new filter)and diff, flush all old brake fluid out of all lines and cylinder's(this should be done every 2 years---after you do all of this yourself you won't care about the money spent for gas -you will just want to go somewhere

Camp in your back yard! Really, just like when you was a kid and tent camped in your back yard, but plug into the electric in your home, run the water hose out to your MH, and camp there for the weekend. You'll enjoy it and you won't use any gas! On more than one occasion, my wife and I have camped out behind our commercial building in an industrial park and we found it very enjoyable. We were away from other people and enjoyed the solitude. Bagman.

The cost of buying a newer rig or making modifications to your old engine may be a lot more than you can save by getting 2 more mpg. If you can afford a newer rig with V-10 and electronic fuel injection, it may be worth it to you for other reasons than better mpg alone.

At 7 miles per gallon a trip to a campground 200 miles from home will take 57 gallons @ 3.50 per gal.. $200.00(its 3.48 where I live currently) the same trip @ 2.75 per gal gas(aprox last yrs price) would be $157.00... additional $43.00.. if you made 5 such trips per year that would be $215.00 additional fuel for the year. That wouldn't make a payment on a newer rig(that may not get any better milage) I don't like the price spike either but, I am just saying.. I may not go quite as far or as often but I can still go... just my take

I don't think anyones dying statement ever contained the words "I wish I had spent more time in the office", so lets go somewhere!
