I've created a map of our upcoming 2008 Vacation. It's going to be just under 2,400 miles, starting from Ontario, Oregon, (top of the map where you see the green box with 1,15) and traveling to Crater Lake, Oregon, and then down the California coast to San Francisco, and then down to Murrieta, south of Los Angeles. The trip home will be via Las Vegas and the incredibly exciting scenery of Nevada (tongue firmly in cheek). We will travel for about 12 or 13 days.
I wanted to make this map so that those of who who have traveled these ways might be able to share some sight-seeing tips. We're pretty aware of what there is to see in Southern California, but any suggestions along the CA coast would be more than welcome.
Thanks in advance!

The map was created using Microsoft Streets and Trips 2007. We charted our trip first, laying out several scenarios, then when we had our final itinerary, I just clicked FILE and Save As a Web Page...
First, are you looking to stay at private RV parks or National and State parks?
If you prefer State and National parks, Any of the Oregon state parks along the coast are excellent. Once you cross the border, spend a night at Jedediah Smith Redwoods (a CA State Park), there is a great KOA in Petaluma, CA that is a good place to stay and visit San Francisco as well as the Napa valley and wine country. We just spent the weekend at Bodega Dunes, SP part of the Sonoma Coast State beach. The trip from Leggett south on Hwy 1 is very beautiful and be sure to stop in Mendocino. Van Damme SP just south of there is a great place to spend a night.
There are so many nice parks to stay in that you probably cannot go wrong.
Consider taking 101 south to LA instead of Hwy 5,, This is a much more scenic route and you can even cut over on 17 to the coast and visit Santa Cruz, Monterey and Carmel.
Near Las vegas is Valley of Fire state park which is baeautiful and they just added some electric sites. We are going there in late May.
Near Crater lake OR is Emerald Lake RV park which is exceptionally nice as a place to stay when visiting that area.
Have a great trip.
BTW I also use that mapping program often.

Klamath's Camper Corral in the Redwoods! We loved it! Have fun!..
We also like the underground caverns in Sun River just south of Bend, but you live pretty close there and I am sure you've seen it. It was lots of fun.
I don't like maping programs because they don't give you the right directions most of the time.
After you leave Crater Lake take 62 to Medford 62 runs in to I5 you don't need to go into town at all. Your program has you going in circles in town. As you are getting closer to I 5 you will see Lowe's & WM get in the right lane ( you have 2 miles to I5 ) take the north ramp to Grants Pass get off at ext. 55 and go to 199 to the coast.

The reality is that Nevada has some incredible scenery. DW and I stayed at Valley of Fire State Park about 60 miles NE of Vegas two years ago. It was awesome..
Have a great trip.

Rt.101 is beautiful. I second the stop at Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Carmel. Also further south is Big Sur. There are state parks - Seacliff, New Brighton Beach, and Sunset Beach in that area. Have a great trip!
