Want to make a trip to Southport, NC to visit some friends. We stayed in a campground in Southport but it has closed and it was my understanding that they were going to build in another location close to Southport. Does anyone know if this has happened or of another campground in that area that can handle a 40ft motor home?
Terryallen is right, there is nothing in/around the Southport area any longer. There were 2 campgrounds on Oak Island but both are closed. Shalotte KOA may be an option. There are also a couple of campgrounds in Wilmington that will get you within about 45 minutes of Southport.
I'm not sure how long you plan on staying.. if it is just overnite, there is a large walmart in Southport. You could call and see if they allow overnight parking there.

It is about halfway between Southport & Myrtle Beach. It was very empty when we went, so nice & quiet. It was clean & we would stay there again. It's very close to Calabash - great seafood.
Stay in Myrtle Beach...about 30 minutes away..you'll probably spend most of your time there anyway, as there is not much to do in Southport (although it is a lovely town and great place to visit).

Southport is about 65 miles from Myrtle Beach. There are a couple of RV parks a little north of MB, but with traffic you are still a good hour away. We have a house on Oak Island and are in the area frequently.
I am not going to tackle the "not much to do there" remark. Activity is in the eye of the beholder (or doer). We really enjoy our frequent visits there.
