Anyone have a guess what could be wrong with our 2-year old nuetered indoor-only male cat, Bubba? Over the weekend he was extra sleepy and lethargic, running a fever of 106 per the vet. Vet did blood work yesterday and we are waiting for the results. In the meantime he is on an antibiotic twice a day and still sleeping non stop. When he gets up he is walking like his back legs hurt, he did use the litter box yesterday, but is having a tough time getting his hind legs in. He ate about a teaspoon of wet food and 10 dry kibbles this morning. It does not appear to be anything wrong with his teeth. The vet didn't feel any lumps on his abdomen but could it be a urinary tract infection, or possibly a hernia? I just hate seeing him like this....Any help would be appreciated.

sounds like it might be a urinary tract infection anything sand like in his urin,how does his breathing sound could be respiratory also,

Good that your vet did blood work. Most urinary tract infections don't cause a fever, the only exception being an infection in the kidney.
There could be an infection somewhere in the body.
For lack of a better term, we see a syndrome in cats called FUO, fever of unknown origin. We aren't able to diagnose exactly what is causing the fever. Most respond to antibiotics with 24 hours.

Update-the vet just called and said all of his blood work is negative...he said to give it another 24 hours of the antibiotics and call back tomorrow night. He's not crying or anything but still very drowsy. Keep the suggestions coming.

Has your vet done an x-ray of his spine? The back legs not working properly worry me and I can't help but guess there may be an underlying injury. Cats are good at covering up their pain, but they will tend to not have an appetite when in pain... that's why I am guessing at an injury of some sort.
Worry, worry.... I'm hoping for a diagnosis so you will know what you can do to help your cat! Please let us know what you find out!

Look for a puncture wound on your cat. They can be in most inconspicuous places, then the cat's loose skin covers it and it becomes infected. Eventually infection can cause above symptoms. Just a thought.....

granite, You got it right! When hubby got home from work last night, he noticed that Bubba was getting an abscess on his belly. Rushed him to the vet, they shaved the area and low and behold 2 puncture wounds most likely inflicted by our other male cat that he tussles around with! The antibiotics have already lowered the fever, and this morning he was more alert. Good news is our vet didn't charge us for the 2nd visit! Thank you to everyone.

Dang, you'd logically think that infection would show up in lab tests, wouldn't you? I am so glad he was started on antibiotics immediately. 106° is a very high temp for anybody, kitty or human. Poor little guy, I hope he feels better real soon.
