We will be traveling shorter distances - but still camping. What a campground loses from out-of-state travelers, may be replaced by more local campers.

I am fortunate to have 5 state parks and even more private campgrounds within a 1 hour drive.

More People will camp for a Season or Longer period in one place.
More People will stay local. example within 300 mile radius to home.

In the north east most campgrounds are near populated area we see more local license plates. I was in Wells, Maine last week for 4 days camping, mostly NH, Mass, NY, Maine, plates although it's early.

As mentioned in prior post campgrounds in remote locations will feel the pinch more than campgrounds in populated locations.
Not sure if campground rates will go up but I would bet Season rates will go up as people would rather find a nice location and save on driving. That is an option we are thinking in advance for 2009 season
find a good campground, nice location and reserve it in advance.

Campground charge less becaue fuel costs are rising?

Heck no!! Hey will have to increase prices to keep up with inflation just like everybody else. Their power bill is going up, labor costs are going up, taxes, food, materials, you name it.

Look to the European RV economic model to see what will happen here. Shorter trips, less moving around, smaller, lighter RV's. Fuel has been $5 plus a gallon over there for decades.

You know, I was out last weekend and the park we stayed at was full and it was cold and snowing. I don't think folks are staying away either... I think they are just staying closer to home.

IMHO CG prices will continue to rise. We are seeing price inflation that we have not seen in years in almost all our product lines. We appear to be in an inflationary period that is being driven by rising costs...not rising demand, i.e. the same as the Jimmy Carter days. That type of inflation inevitably leads to wage inflation, which will affect CG owners just like it affects other businesses. So, wages will go up, utilities will go up, taxes will go up, maintenance and repairs will go up, etc. Where can CG prices go but up? My friends, IMHO we are in for a rough ride for a while. Just when the Fat Boy wanted to retire!!!!!!!!

I agree that they will likely be increasing their prices especially seasonals. Those who use their rv's will no doubt pay the higher prices and the campground operators will need the still make money.

On the plus side, maybe we'll have a better choice of campsites.

I wouldn't count on it yet. I'm not sure RVers are traveling less or will in the near future. Haven't seen any concrete data on the subject so its hard to tell. We just got back from a long snowbird trip to many state parks, etc. and the one's I expected to be busy, were busy, sometimes full. I guess I'm still a little optimistic that gas won't increase too much more or won't stay there. If it does go to $5 and beyond, then I think that RVing may be the least of out worries.
