Can anyone recommend a nice campground in Southern Virgina or Northern North Carolina thats open all winter. Thinking of staying closer to home this winter, with possable $5/gal gas on its way. Thanks Sunline1

We've stayed in Madison, VA all last winter. There were a couple of us FTer's, but more seasonal people who would come on weekends. We were in Statesville, NC two years before that. Unless you're looking at the mountains, most CG's are open all year.

sunline1,

We just found a very nice campground in North east NC. It's North River Campground in Shawboro, NC. on Garrington Island Rd. They have 70 plus very large sites (4 pull throughs), big rig friendly, 50 amp. and full hookup. All sites overlook a 5 acre lake. It's 14 miles from Elizabeth City, NC and 40 miles from the outer Banks and only an hour from the Norfolk and Virginia Beach area. Enjoy John.

I haven't checked the average winter temperatures in the southern Virginia, northern North Carolina area, but my gut feeling says you will burn up as many dollars in heating costs as you would in additional fuel going further south, and much further south at that.

Just a thought you might want to check out.

ryoung is right, I live in western NC in the hills and it gets cold all over this state. You may want to try SC along the beaches, its not as cold.

Temps are something to think about, @ $3.60/gal gas, @ $5.00/gal gas price, temps may boil out a little better @ 9 mpg. Also length of stay say 2 vs 4 months plays a pretty important role in heating cost vs a few hundred more dollars of gas. Which price per gal do you think we'll be closer to next fall ??? Thanks for all the inputs everyone. Sunline1

It is hard to put a price on Comfort. Most RVs are not well insulated.
Unless you like being cold go further south even if it costs a few $$$ more.

My DD lived in Charleston, SC for a couple of years while her husband was in medical school. I think that wintering over there could be fairly nice. The temps rarely get down to freezing and are in the 50-60's most days. Southern VA, IMHO is too darn cold to winter over unless you are well insulated including insulated and heated holding tanks. I would look at southern SC and GA.
